Per the Houston Chronicle's Q&A with Morey, the Rockets are going to pick up the 4th year option on Kevin McHale's contract. They have not signed him to a long-term contract extension.

This, to me, shows that the team isn't exactly "all in" on McHale. They can fire him at any time if things go south without being stuck paying long term money.

Maybe this will make you feel better.

So they have one foot in, one foot out but they don't really care.

Can we possibly bring in Mark Jackson as a lead assistant coach? The Warriors seem done with him...

I am guessing that Mark Jackson returns to ESPN if he gets fired and doesn't get a head coach job. The ESPN gig likely pays better than a lead assistant spot.

That is true, but I can hope can't I? I think the passion to win a ring could win out over all of that.

The Rockets aren't going to fire McHale during the season barring a player mutiny or the team getting off to a horrid start. So he's going to be their coach for the entirety of 2014-15. Sure, that's not "all in" for the long-term, but it's committing an entire additional season to the guy. That covers 2 years of Dwight's prime(and 2 out of the 3 years of his contract).

If we're back here a year from now in the exact same situation, Morey and Les are gonna look like first rate morons. I hope for everyone's sake this doesn't wind up like the Texans all over again.

fire him anytime? like 4 games in, mike brown style?

No. I think he is here to stay. we just got to make peace with that and hope he improves in the little things he hasn't improved on since he got here.

So no hope for team improvement next year. Harden ISO, Dwight ISO, no pnr, no defense, no ability to run plays for good shooters like Daniels, no ability to defend a last second shot.

Harden may be young, but Howard can't afford to waste time.

Exactly. If next summer comes up like this again, we are going to talk about whether we should trade Howard before we completely lose him for good in a year.

No saying that HC change is without a risk, though.

the best hope to make out of this scenario is that they fake committed to mchale with the tacit understanding between both sides that he will voluntarily resign shortly.

    please please please resign..

The Rockets won't trade Howard, but they will be under enormous pressure if 2014-15 ends in another early playoff defeat. God help them if they lose in the first round again. You think things are bad now? Imagine going into the last year of Dwight's contract with the team in turmoil, the head coach getting let go(no way McHale survives 3 straight first round exits), and a long playoff run almost mandatory if you want to keep your star big man from bolting. Never mind the prospect of a lot of empty seats at Toyota Center.

I hope for Morey's sake this upcoming season works out, cuz things are going to get really ugly if 2014-15 ends in a similar fashion to this season.

That's a good point. A real show of confidence would be a new 4-year contract. Even so, Morey's not the type to sign contracts before he has to for flexibility's sake. So, I wouldn't be all that surprised to go through this season with a lame duck, and then have him sign a new contract at the end. Of course, if there was another 1st round exit next year....

This. Please let it be a humane exit strategy and no more.
