5:03 left in G6, Lopez was executing his freethrows. Lin was then called by McHale and instructed how the next play should go. When the 2nd freethrow was made, Howard inbounded the ball to Lin. Lin dribbled for one or two, Harden called for the ball. Lin had no choice but passed the ball to Harden. McHale saw that, seemed pissed and then just turned his head back. Lin shrugged his shoulder to McHale as well. As people pointed out many times, this team was not coached by McHale but Harden. Harden demanded the ball, run the play and finished the play in his will almost all of the time. I think he was spoiled since 13-14. (He's not like that in 12-13) Harden really has no D and no discipline. Not to mention a champion. McHale cannot own his star player. Harden has been the real coach. (as we saw from the 0.9 sec play) Videos: Lin was called by McHale http://on.nba.com/Rl8S2P Harden demanded the ball. McHale pissed. http://on.nba.com/1i6wmmN
While Harden did get an open shot out of the possession, I think the OP has a valid point. There were a number of times during the season that Harden clearly did not run the play the coaches called, which compounds with his lack of full effort on defense MUCH OF THE TIME.
Harden has this franchise by the balls, and he knows it. For all the people who pile on McHale for not running plays, this is what actually happens. The times where they do actually draw something up, Harden does his own thing instead.
As much as I sympathize with McHale after seeing this, it's still his fault that he can't control his players as shown by the same video!
I dont blame McHale or harden really….I put more on morey #1 was ok with jones to starting – because McHale actually has plays we saw plenty of them when he had pick & pop PFs. Its only so much you, can do. with a small PF that cant set picks or doesn’t demand a player to guard him after the pick if they know he cant shoot. #2 wanted bev to start no back up PG playmaker (let brooks go) – when you let bev start as PG and average 2assist, this is what happens I don’t even blame harden for having this kind of mentality this year. He had to do everything. Lin averaged the same amount of TOs he did last year with less assist. So you let him start he will would’ve averged more assist and the ball would’ve moved more.
Wait, so Lin has no choice but to pass? He needs to run the play called and screw what Harden calls for. If James has a problem with that he can take it up with the coach. Granted, there are special situations where the called play doesn't pan out, or a player gets a favorable match up, etc. But most of the time you need to run what's called. If it doesn't work then it's clearly on the coach.
As a head coach, if you cannot control your star player of the team, you should be fired and be replaced with someone who can.
LOL, McHale just flails his hands like whatever. Have no idea why they are keeping McHale around other than Dwight liking him. Imagine if James did pulled that on Pop or Carlisle or Thibs?
I agree that Lin didn't have to listen to Harden, but if he didn't, who is to say that Harden would participate? We've seen how uninvolved and apathetic James can look from time to time. I think Lin wanted to get the ball moving in one way or another, even if it meant breaking up McHale's play. It's obvious that this team needs some serious authority coming from the sideline.
hm well I watched the video but it's hard to confirm what OP said is true, but I can definitely believe that Harden would do that. .. As for Lin - he is stuck in the middle - so he has a choice to pick. Harden or coach? lol pretty cool team.
i've always acknowledged that mchale when he says "balls got sticky" he means harden massaged and did his own thing. but that's when you have to have your own balls and do something about it.
Hakeem used to do the same thing. I've heard Kenny Smith say the Rudy would draw up a play and then Hakeem would just order Kenny to throw him the ball. Actually, I think most of the superstar players do whatever they damn well please most of the time.
These type of things don't happen under a better coach. Harden and the rest of the team really have no respect for McHale. McHale to the team is probably just one of the boys but not really seen as a leader.
Even if what you said is true, Hakeem still brought 2 champions back. Harden did what he wanted and ended up right here.
