It really is. Harden is clearly better but mchale has lin come off the bench. So its probably trade harden for the lof. Amirite lofs?
Here's a question to those that think we should trade Harden...what would you realistically expect to get for Harden that would make the team more of a contender?
Well, this was suggested on Twitter this morning: https://twitter.com/PeteStopTire/statuses/463169089322483712 Richard Yao (@PeteStopTire): trade harden & bev for tony Allen & manimal. Def wins championships.</p>— Richard Yao (@PeteStopTire) LOLLLLLLLLLLLL.
Poll: In his last ten seasons, how many times did George Karl make it past the first round? A: 0 B: 1
In the last 17 years, who's made it out of the first round more often? George Karl or the Houston Rockets?
I dont really have enough time to explain every set the Rockets run. However, take a look at this video, and skip to 1 minute- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FTAWs3dy1g I disagree with alot of what Coach Nick or whatever this guys name is, but he does a pretty good job of explaining basic offensive sets to people who have never played organized B-Ball before. Check out some of his videos on the Rockets. He can explain alot of the offensive sets they run. Lots of spread action with dribble penetration, some "Horns", a ton of P&R action with different shuffle cuts, and now with Dwight there has been some post up action added to their sets. -What I'm ASSUMING here with Morey's thinking is that the risk in bringing in a new coach is actually scrapping alot of the free flowing abilities of their offense that make them so hard to guard for more traditional sets that are more predictable. More predictable doesn't always mean bad(you know the shots you are going to get & you know the ball wont get stagnant if they know what they are doing), but un-predictability and freelance in your offense CAN BE good because it can catch the defense off guard & allows for more creativity from your playmakers (not always a good thing if the ball gets "sticky"). This is actually something Morey himself has commented on, and something he obviously believes in. It comes full circle to the whole "running set plays" vs "freelance" argument. Obviously Morey is very passionate about what he's trying to install in their offense, and it shows even more glaringly by what they experiment with in the D-League. Look the system the Rockets run is almost always going to be tied to what the players can do, and there almost always will be pro's and cons to each. With the Rockets, the con will continue to be when the ball bogs down, and stops moving- Pro's and cons of each - -Current Rockets system- Inconsistent shooting to keep lane open, not enough efficient shot creators from the perimeter, fast pace needs more disciplined defenders. -Princeton sets- Young roster with low BBIQ, no passing bigs, too many long 2's, takes the ball out of Harden's hands to create -4 out/1 in - Dwight isn't Hakeem, shooters are inconsistent -Triangle - Not the right personnel, hard to coach, young roster etc. etc. I dont know that there is a perfect system for this team, but Morey seems to be very passionate about what they run, how the personnel fits (or will fit with additional players acquired), and obviously feels like there is risk in bringing in a new coach that might scrap everything that made them a top offense last year just to improve areas he thinks can be improved with time anyways. There is the old saying "If it aint broke"... well on paper at least, this offense is definitely not broke... The eye test would tell you otherwise WHEN THE BALL GETS STICKY, but that's just the Con of running this offense. That's going to happen. On Defense, on paper during the regular season they were pretty decent. The eye test would tell you that this is probably more of a product of Dwight being here than actually having good defensive players. In fact I would say that the Rockets have some of the most un-disciplined defenders in the NBA. I dont have time to run you through some of the stuff that they do that I Like, and things I dont agree with(always switching). Etc. Maybe someone else out there has a little more time to go into the Rockets defensive schemes a little more or find you a good clip to show you. IMO the defensive sets & schemes are "meh.." I think they could get much, much better in this area honestly, and that's probably where this new assistant is going to earn his keep, and make a big impact. But a big part of their job is going to be installing discipline in the big time offenders... which is no small task.
You're implying that fans around here have the patience to give George Karl 17 years. . . . He wouldn't last through four first-round exits, like the last four years he coached.
Excellent post. I disagree though regarding McHale. I don't think the system is very advanced and doesn't seem to maximize Hardin. But rep points for these explanation.
No, I'm just saying that trashing George Karl's coaching record is probably not a good idea given that he's had far more success in the postseason since 1997 than the Rockets. And he's done it with 3 different organizations.
I never said it was advanced. If anything, its the opposite. Very basic basketball, but typically its the type of basketball an old school NBA coach would think of as a negative way to play due to the old school thinking of the 3 point shot, isolations, and the coach giving up control to their star players. When really on paper, its actually a fairly potent style if played the right way, and is really hard to guard because its so unpredictable. The con of playing this way is well.... obviously its going to look like a very selfish style of basketball when the plays break down, and its going to look like your just jacking up shots from 3.
Why would trading Harden even be an option? Granted he sucked during the series, but you don't dump a star player for having 1 bad series. The main things the team should concentrate on this off season is building a bench beyond Lin and Asik.
