really shouldn't be surprised the Magic comment won't get any play bc he gets a free pass since he's a media darling but it really should, disappointing
Just out of curiosity, is it d'Antoni or D'Antoni? Just wondering because with the French that d' is kept lower case. So is anyone here Italian and knows that language format??
I think there's an unwritten code of conduct that you don't trash someone in your business like that just because he's done poorly. And it not absolutely clear if the poor performance of the Lakers was totally D'Antoni's fault. I don't like D'Antoni. But Magic's comment was classless. What would you think of Hakeem if he came out to celebrate when McHale got fired after we lost in the first round?
There are going to be much better job openings available so I doubt the Lakers will have their pick of the litter. If Chicago opens up (small possibility) and Houston opens up, those are two jobs that are MUCH higher on the list. Not only is LA bad right now, but that Kobe situation is like a weight around your neck.
He has dissed D'antoni publicly many times before. This is nothing new. He has also dissed Jim Buss for not hiring Phil Jackson publicly, and requested him to resign. Hell, he has trashed the Lakers' players too after some of their embarrassing defeats.
adios, Pringles. While he didn't have a decent roster to work with this past season, he is the perfect example of a coach who will not adjust to his players and demands that they fit into his system.
Magic Johnson is just another frustrated Lakers fan. The city of Los Angeles is crawling with them. Magic is not thinking with his "business mogul/sports icon" brain, but speaking like a random fan (much like people here on Clutchfans).
Love Magic Johnson, but as an ambassador of the game this was definitely beneath him. Would have preferred he take the high road and just say that he wishes D'Antoni and the Lakers the best.
That's the problem. He's not a random fan, or even a guy in the media like Bill Simmons. He's a face of not only the Lakers franchise but the NBA. Morey, for example, acts like he's a "random fan" sometimes just for fun. But he never says trashy things against anybody in the business.
Did Magic have a similar response when Mike Brown was ousted? If not, then this is racial because as bad as D'antoni was he was still a better coach than Mike Brown.
Actually Charles Barkley did on air last night so that's not true at all. Still we all agree he can't go posting things as a fan in this manner, its just cheap. However message board fans can gang up on Jeremy Lin and demand he gets sent back to Stanford on a daily basis
I was told this morning that D'Antoni and Magic have had issues for a long time. Supposedly D'Antoni didn't want Magic around the team, and was not interested in his input and made it very clear. D'Antoni can be very arrogant... and Magic has lived his whole life with a sense of entitlement.... two guys with huge egos and things happen. I thought that the tweet was honest but classless... but I guess he is Magic Johnson and decided it was worth whatever flack he gets.. which is minimal... I don't feel bad for D'Antoni because he isn't the most empathetic man himself.
would have said Daryl/Les should have listen to Hakeem!! the thing is about Magic's tweet I dont think it was appropriate for him to say it in the manner he did, but to Magic's defense it was very consistent with everything else he has said in the media about D'Antoni. Magic was never behind the signing at all and wanted him gone from day one. Seeing it finally happen just made him happy - the guy is and will always be a Laker at heart and just wants that team to do well. Magic needs to understand though he is more than just a fan - though many of his tweets are very "fan like" in nature - he cant be this open about a subject like this and he needs to hold himself to a higher standard.
