Well, just wait to see what he can share on Stern. This will be entertaining us for years (and breaking the hearts of us true basketball fans as well).

cant do anything without the approval of the NBA commissioner office considering all trades...Sterling has effectively lost power as an owner in the NBA. And that would totally undercut the value of his brand.

I think it's gonna be relatively easy to force a sale. With Sterling banned they could trade away all the quality players for minimum salary guys, then turn around and give every minimum salary guy a max contract and then release them until they busted the franchise with all the luxury taxes.

Sterling has 2 choices: Sell and get some money out of the deal or not sell and lose all his equity.

I think the suspension and loss of power undercuts Sterling, not the Clippers brand. The Clippers will still function without him. Throughout the last 20 years that I've followed the Clippers, the thing undercutting their brand the most is Sterling's terrible ownership. That dude finally got a winning team placed in his lap bc of Stern vetoing the Rockets Lakers trade. Before that, it was a consistently pathetic team (save for the random Cassell playoff year).

The NBA is not going to screw over the competitive balance of their league to force an owner to sell a franchise - that would just do even more damage to their product and the primary people being penalized would be the fans.

The sad thing is the Clippers were the only team outside of miami that could at time play at a championship level.

    - The NBA is punishing Sterling now because they don't want to risk losing fans and sponsors. Purely a commercial consideration, which is what businesses do and should do.

Kind of funny how some "conservatives" here are getting bothered about businesses exercising their business judgment for a business purpose.

    - For people who argue "but it's his team!," I'd remind them that for that team to do business the other 29 teams, each owned by its owner(s), have to play the Clippers. Thus, the NBA has a constitution and other contracts providing for the remedies that Silver is announcing today (I'm sure Sterling's attorney will try to find ways to argue the appropriateness of using these remedies in these circumstances.

The interdependent nature is one of the ways in which a sports league is different from some of the other businesses-- and the argument that the NBA itself uses to justify being exempted from anti-trust laws with respect to stuff like salary caps and drafts.

The fact of the matter is that it appears that most of the other 29 owners don't want to do business with Sterling any more. If Sterling has the some sort of moral right to do business as he wants, don't the other owners have the same right? In fact, they have contracts specifying the relationships among the teams and owners.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I saw an interview that Gretchen Carlson of Fox News did with Jim Gray just prior to the NBA news conference.

Apparently, Gray was able to speak by telephone to Sterling just prior to the news conference this morning. Most of what was shared in the phone call, was off the record, but 2 things were mentioned by Gray.

    1. Sterling had not heard from the NBA what the punishment would be prior to the announcement from the NBA. Gray said he had read what TMZ predicted it would be (Indefinite suspension and heavy fine) and Sterling's response to that was "Well, lets see what Adam has to say".

    2. Sterling stated to Gray the team was not for sale. Period.

My prediction is that Sterling concedes. He'll take the better part of a year to sell the team, but he'll sell it and not cause any more fuss.

Silver doesn't have to do that. All he has to do is threaten to make all the Clippers players eligible for free agency if he doesn't agree.

All the stars walk, the coaches walk, and the franchise implodes on it's own.

Then it's not the responsibility of the NBA, but on Sterling. They gave the players free choice to leave, they left. And Sterling's asset just lost a ton of value.

All without Silver making a single trade.

The NBA is a cartel, so its actions are not entirely reflective of the actions of a normal business/industry.
