If it's like Steinbrenner's, he is allowed to have no involvement with the team whatsoever. He can't go to games, he can't talk to the general manager, he can't override player trades, nothing. He can't be consulted even at his house. Any communication he has with anyone involved with the team regarding the operation of the team would lead to further penalties. (loss of draft picks, etc.)

So my prediction comes true. Suspension and a fine. He'll never step foot in an NBA arena again.

What is the reasoning the NBA is using for the $5m fine? Comments that damage the brand? Like Cuban said, this is illegally obtained footage and kind of hypocritical to Americans whining about NSA leaks. Social media is so damn pathetic

Just the straw that broke the camel's back with Sterling.

He can lawyer up. His business instinct will be to sell the team, cash in, but his ego and pride might make him want to fight it out in court, to demand the suspension be given a "reasonable" expiration date. He's universally hated now, but perhaps he's delighted with being an arch villain. All he needs now is a secret hideout and a costume.

If I recall correctly, the founder of Firefox stepped down because apparently he donated money from his private funds to anti gay-marriage groups. He faced a lot of heat and pressure to resign.

It is a very strange world we live in nowadays. There are certain groups (ethnic and otherwise) protected by the media and the boundary between a CEO's public and private persona is now blurred.

It's not illegally obtained. He knew he was being recorded.

Public relations matters a ton for the NBA. It's not that strange.

for a guy who really just shows up to the games - he doesnt get involved in day to day ops. this is nothing - again a $5 million dollar fine? The guy stands to make that just from this seasons playoffs. This is just super petty if true.

I imagine the players will not be happy - there will be backlash and I wouldnt be surprised if the NBPA will try to see if all the players can get out of their contracts and become FAs

What exactly will forcing him to sell his team for a billion dollars do?

Lifetime ban from the Clippers and NBA
Fined $2.5 million, the max allowed under the NBA constitution
I will urge the BOG to exercise it's authority to force a sale of the team.
