    Not true.

If the players refuse to play they'd have to file as voluntarily retired. They'd forgo their remaining salary and be barred from playing for another team for at least 1 year. Sterling would not have to waive them.

There is no way for a player to just refuse to play and force a team to waive him and still get his money while the team is still penalized on the cap.

Edit: A player could return from voluntary retirement without waiting the 1 year requirement ONLY if they get unanimous approval from the league owners.

    This.

Chris Paul and Blake Griffin are not going to "refuse to play". They cannot just "quit" to get out of playing for the Clippers. Further, Sterling is a very stubborn man. He is not going to just release his players.

The NBA is going to try very hard to force Donald Sterling to sell his team by fining him and limiting his involvement in the NBA community, but they cannot just get rid of him. My guess is that Sterling refuses to sell and comes up with some situation where his wife takes complete control of the organization so Sterling can spend more time with his biracial prostitutes and evicting immigrants from his property.

The only one I can see "forcing" their way out is Doc Rivers, and even then, Sterling will require a ransom in trade.

I agree. His son in law or someone else in the family will probably become the official chariman/CEO/whatever, but Sterling will still own the team.

What's the worst the commissioner can even do to him? He obviously can't be allowed to own a team any longer, but if they just make him sell the team, then he still gets millions of dollars out of this. I wish the nba, players associations etc. could somehow vote to TAKE this team from him, for nothing. It's time to set an example & send the message that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated.

I stand corrected, I didn't know any of this. Still, there are ways of getting him to waive them. They could simply play awful (how could they possibly punish them for that?).

And, I'm not trying to say this is anything the clippers players should feel obligated to do but they could hurt Sterling if they wanted to, without any outside help.

Yeah, let's set the example that if you have beliefs that are repugnant that we can take your business holdings.

    Sounds like a great idea.

Many owners prefer to own 100% of their arena. They are huge money making machines. Saying Sterling shares Staples also means he doesn't make as much money off the stadium as he could. Note the parking itself is a lot of money. Licensing, food, plus hockey money and all the concert money throughout the year.

Sure they could and then the Clippers would go back to being the Clippers that Sterling was fine to own all these years lol.

They really can't hurt him. His sponsors can hurt him, but the players under contract to the Clippers have no power to deal him any damage without hurting themselves.

Not just repugnant beliefs, but illegal actions.

Either way, if stern was still in charge, the nba would be assuming ownership of the clippers without any compensation to DS. Basketball reasons.

Sterling has not done something illegal here. Being a racist is not illegal unless you discriminate. Charles Barkley claims that Sterling discriminates against a "black league" but there is no basis for that.

Not wanting his girlfriend to bring black people to a game is not illegal.

Honest I'm not sure Sterling meant don't bring your boyfriends to a game. No one is going to want to be around the nba now.

He didn't say boyfriends, but he clearly was telling her not to bring black guys to the games or take pictures with them so he doesn't have to answer to his friends about it. Or society or culture or whatever.

He never said anything close to "no black people allowed at my games."

I couldn't listen to the how thing. Sterling sounds pathetic but he was obviously set up and it really was an emotional thing. The comments I did read could be interpreted at different meanings.

You can rail on all day long about the unfairness of it all, but in the end Sterling's views have caused embarrassment for the league and that is all they need to happen to act. Of course, most NBA fans knew about him already, but the general public didn't....now they do.

They may not be able to make him sell, but they certainly can revoke his franchise to play in the NBA.

Even if he still owns the team next year, good luck getting any free agents to come there or getting his own FAs to re-sign.
