If you're going to blame McHale you should blame Morey too

    If Les didn't also approve of McHale, he wouldn't have been hired. He deserves blame too.

    There is a huge difference between being a "Yes Man" to the front office and agreeing to the mission that the front office has put in place and invested huge resources on.

    The first implies that the coach is a puppet. The second implies that the coach is part of a larger team. Some coaches want control over everything, including being GM, and that is one of many philosophies that have lost and won in the NBA.

    I can state with confidence that:
    1- Morey wasn't looking for a "Yes Man". He may have gotten one, but Morey is way too smart to think he can coach a basketball team.
    2- Every team in the NBA wants and seeks out a coach that agrees with the philosophy of the front office and ownership.
    3- The Rocket's front office is more involved with the day to day coaching, and game planning than any other front office. That makes finding a coach a more difficult task, but it doesn't make it wrong.

    Are the Rockets even executing "Morey's system" right now? They seem to be shying away from 3's, failing to get transition baskets, not running high-efficiency plays like pick-and roll, etc. The Blazers probably deserve some credit for gumming things up but I imagine Morey's probably watching the games and wondering what the hell the team is doing as much as any fan is.

    I agree with you in general, that Morey wants a coach that is open to analytics, but I don't think it is as simple as "he will be a yes man to the front office".

    Morey wants a coach that is open to analytics and open to change, and one that is progressive.... but I don't think he necessarily requires a "yes" man. The Rockets were seriously interested in Carlisle and have long admired Stan Van Gundy.... neither of which are "yes men"..... but they are coaches willing to discuss and debate with their GM's and are both willing to adjust their style of play depending on how the league changes.

    These conversations would be easier if we knew exactly how much meddling Les does. With that out of the way, McHale is Morey's hire, right? If Morey was against hiring McHale, but Les overruled him (and why would he do that) then the Rockets have way way bigger problems than I think. If the Rockets get booted in the first, the total season grade has to be a D. That's a failing grade even though you have two stars and a solid bench.

    A = championship
    B = conference finals
    C = second round
    D = first round
    F = don't make the playoffs

    So should McHale be fired when his team loses in the first? I think so, because they had home court. If McHale can't figure out how to get Harden to buy in, another coach should be given that chance.

    all those plays are great. however, the game slows down in the post season and you need a half court offense in the post season. you get those plays when you can, but those opportunities are limited in the playoffs.

    This wasn't the team that Morey hired Mchale to coach. The team outgrew Mchale but the Rockets haven't had a reason to fire him, because they haven't underachieved until now.

    McHale should have long gone and that is Morey's one big fault.

    Morey has built a very good roster but unfortunately it is futile when you have an incompetent, clueless headcoach like McHale.

    Morey has to redeem himself by firing McHale ASAP. One fo the 5 worst coaches in the NBA does not deserve to be coaching this team.

    Yes, you mean the same coach that looked out of touch in Minnesota this year?

    AB wouldn't be playing over Lin anyway, and Daniels has been getting the minutes.

    You mean the guy that made the minimum?

    Did you watch the Celtics this season? Rondo shot 40% from the floor, 28% from the three point line, 62% from the free throw line and was terrible defensively.

    If you want to rip Morey, why not go after ...... not resigning Dragic, passing on Leonard, passing on Faried.

    So to be clear on the principle of this thread, telling a coach to play fast-paced and avoid long twos automatically forces him to make r****ded substitutions, run no plays, make almost no adjustments, and underachieve on defense despite having three (!) reasonable all-defensive team candidates?

    I like it. Leslie Alexander's new nickname should be Lex Luthor.

    We can blame everything on Lin _ but seriously, is it all Lin's fault...? These guys don't know how to run an offense (live by the 3 die by the 3) and don't have any concept of team defense and no discipline on both sides of the ball... That's on the coach.

    McHale has most of the blame but he shares some of the responsibility for the uncoordinated offense if morey doesn't want the coach involved with play calling. The lack of half court offense is disturbing.

    Am pretty sure Morey didn't want adelman to leave, Rick and les weren't on the same page and he left after the contract issues, as for mchale didn't alot people say that lest wanted him to be the coach because he was cheap and we were in a rebuilding mode...???

    am pretty sure Les and Morey will reevaluate Mchale's situation and his future and hopefully they'll cut ties with him in the off-season.

    Casspi's a scrub, no need to explain that. Rondo a terrible fit? Have you watched the playoffs any? Had we a point guard that can CREATE off the dribble, we wouldn't have to settle for contest 3's all game. Not to mention Rondo's defense ain't too bad. Your totally off base bro

    Yes...Morey gets some of the blame for hiring McHale.

    That said, no one is going to make the right move 100% of the time. Mistakes will be made.

    But lets keep things in perspective.

    Lets examine these three individuals in particular: Lin, McHale, Morey.

    The question you want to ask yourself is can we win with this person based on their track record so far? And does this person in any way hurt your chances to win more than they help? Is the risk they bring worth the reward?

    Lin: IMO, he fails the test with flying colors.

    McHale: Ditto

    Morey: I believe you can win a championship with Morey as your GM. Now he has to be able to find the right coach and make the final tweaks to the roster, but I don't believe Morey is going to be a detriment.

    McHale and Lin...This team will never get where they want to go with those guys. And really, Harden if he keeps playing no defense. But I'm hoping that another coach that holds him accountable and commands respect can help with that.

    No. The coach with the highest winning percentage in Rockets history. The one who lead us to our first second round playoff series after almost a decade, with a injury plagued, talentless, undersized roster. Remember him?

    Ummmm, he was already playing over Lin anyway during a few stretches in the season. What brings you to believe this foolery now? Especially after watching Lin hand Portland 2 playoff games

    Interesting you say this:rolleyes:

    Yea that guy. The guy who hasn't touched the court in the playoffs, and the who sucked azz at the end of the season when he got playing time.

    The Celtics suck dude. If I'm a superstar coming off surgery, I'm not about to waste my season playing with these scrubs. Rondo's a PLAYMAKER. If you don't see how we could've used a ELITE playmaker who defends & rebounds then you don't understand NBA basketball and wasting my time.

    I still don't get Morey's hatred for long 2's. Yes it may be a less efficient shot, but what happens when the opponent takes away your 3s and lay-ups?

    It's like a boxer with different types of punches: jabs, uppercuts and haymakers, etc. A haymaker may not be as efficient as jabs, but that doesn't mean you don't use it when the opportunity arises. The more weapons you have the more unpredictable you are.

    Same thing with long 2's. It's a weapon. May not be the best weapon, but an important one that needs to be used and perfected none the less.
