I just wanted to ask, if anyone here on ClutchFans has/had broken their clavicle (collarbone) and had to get surgery?

...And if so, how many weeks or months before YOU were able to start playing basketball or a contact type of sport again?

.....Did you just start to play as you gradually started to feel your shoulder was getting better, or did you wait until your doctor/surgeon said it was 100% okay for you to play again based on your x-rays and overall range of movement?

....... I honestly just want to know everyones experiences with whatever type of clavicle (collarbone) injury you've had + surgery and how long your recovery time was before going back to playing a contact sport, or specifically basketball if that's what you play!

...........I sadly broke my collarbone while playing basketball in early February.
It'll be about 10 weeks this week since I had surgery; and now, day by day, I'm feeling better and better, but I haven't decided to start playing yet.
I will be seeing my surgeon again in a couple weeks, and I hope he has good news for me because I feel really good right now, but not amazing yet. I really want to start playing basketball by the middle of May, and play some serious pick up games with friends in June. Who thinks it's possible?

Please share and let me know your experiences, I would really appreciate it!

That timetable would seem reasonable to me. I might wait til June until you resume athletic activity. Light activity that doesn't cause pain would be good during the month of May but I don't think I would be playing sports with anyone. Maybe just stick to the weight room and cardio until June.

I dunno just listen to your body and ask your doctor too many questions about the injury and the recovery time from your procedure.

I've broken my left collarbone twice, but didn't require surgery and was up and running in about 5-6 weeks. If you had surgery, it means it was a more serious injury, so just listen to what the doctor says and take it easy. In my opinion, you'll be fine by June.

I dislocated my clavicle a few years ago and required surgery the very next day. Since I didn't have insurance I never had a follow up with a doctor so I just kinda made my own judgment as to when I was ready to play again. I remember it took me about 4 months to get back on the court again. My range of motion was not there at all so I was shooting like Shawn Marion. After a month of playing about once or twice a week I gradually got my range of motion back and never looked back since then.

This just happened to my roommate. He's looking at about 6 months of not being able to really use his arm. But his break was insane, they had to like make a pilot system in his arm almost.

A dislocation and a fracture are completely different injuries, you can't compare recovery time between those two.

In sixth grade, I broke someone's collar bone. I fell on top of him when we were playing soccer.

That sounds very sad man! :(

I had a 1/3 distal fracture. I'm just praying so much and doing a lot of rehab and personal therapy to get my range of movement as fluid as possible so I can feel comfortable playing again, and of course get the clear from my surgeon. It'll be exactly 17 weeks when the weekend of the little tournament I want to be happens in June. I REALLY hope I feel good by then!

Has anyone had a 1/3 distal fracture collar bone break here?

I remember that Aaron Rodgers fractured his collarbone midseason and was able to play in the last week of the season, probably rushed to fight for playoffs. The podcasts I was listening to at the time said that this was way ahead of schedule, and only possible because the fracture was either partial or not in the middle of the bone. I don't know if that's similar to a distal 1/3 but hopefully this wasn't completely useless.

Thanks for that info, that actually helped a lot. I googled his fracture, and its kinda somewhat similar to mine. So my hope is alive! Football is a tougher sport, so hopefully I'll be okay with basketball! Keep the experiences/info coming guys! :)

Yeah I broke mine playing football in early December, had surgery two days after the break, and resumed full athletic activities by March. Wore a sling for a month and then began range of motion PT which lasted for about two months.

I don't know if this is normal but I'm still a little tender around my scar. It doesn't really affect my daily activities or anything but it hurts when someone aggressively grabs my right shoulder.

Best of luck with the remainder of your recovery. You should be good to go by June.

I broke mine when I was in year 5 I think. Brother pushed me into a wall.

    Didn't have surgery on it.

I can't recall how long it took me to have my first game back at basketball though. So. Don't know why I answered your question. Sorry guy.

I know it wasn't too long though. I'd be confident in saying 3 months max
