Administrative professional's day (secretaries day)

A unicorn? That's as real as your secretary.

 

Am I the only one who really does not like these theme days. Why do we need a day for everything (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_observance / http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_commemorative_days / ). I refuse to be part of it.

 

I received a nice flower arrangement.

 

Does every job get a holiday? Where is boss appreciation day? Or janitor appreciation day?

My wife's friend makes 88K working as an "Administrative Assistant" for an Oil and Gas firm downtown. Not bad for someone without a college degree, 5 weeks of vacation and 2 hour lunches.

But yeah, moral of the story is that Admin can be a very good gig.

 

damn...I don't make THAT much, but at my company 1.5-2 hour lunches are the norm and the vacation "allotment" is extremely flexible. and you know, the work environment is top notch, it's super laid back but everyone helps everyone else get their **** done. best thing about it, I've started training towards a career in the industry, so while I have my cushy zero pressure administrative job I'm also learning the ins and outs of the legal side of the O&G industry. but truly...being a secretary is THE LIFE when you <3 your bosses.

At my wife's company, receptionists only stay in that position for about 6 months and then are integrated into one of the departments in an admin or projector coordinator role and given full training.

It really is important these days to give people a sense that they have opportunity to keep climbing the ladder no matter their educational background or current job title.

I know I recently changed jobs because of corporate structure and my own happiness. I was basically doing administrative tasks under my supervisor and she was great to work with, and was grooming me to be team lead for our department, but the co-owner of the company was a complete tool and eventually he grated on me so much I looked for a new opportunity because I couldn't stand putting money in the pocket of a total dickcheese with zero redeeming qualities.

Now I'm working for a very small company, but we feel like a family and the mood is so relaxed. I make roughly the same I was making before, but now I am doing digital marketing, website management and I've essentially been made office manager and now have a guy working under me.

I figure I'm in a win-win situation because either we expand and I eventually make more money as a manager, or I gain the necessary experience to move into a similar role somewhere else.

 

Interesting...I work with legal departments at some O&G companies.
