You would have to hold a gun to my head to get me on a ferry with several hundred other people after all the ferry disasters that seem to occur on a regular basis. I will ride the smaller ones shorter distances, like you drive your car on or whatever (common here in the states) to cross a small body of water. But, forget about it if it's an open ocean ferry. No way.

Seems like this is becoming the rule instead of the exception. Every time we hear about a maritime disaster, it seems like the crew are among the first ones off the ship - including the captain.

I really hope they find her parents and brother. The shock of losing your entire immediate family will haunt her for the rest of her life.

I don't know the stats off hand but I am guessing annually there are far fewer ferry disasters per trips than there are automobile accidents per trips.

such a sad tragedy.. what is up with all these horrible incompetent captains.
Asiana Filght, Costa Concordia and now this Ferry. . Also if I was a parent I'm not letting my high school child go anywhere now..

Asian Flight (flight full of exchange students and high school tourists)
California Bus Crash (full of highschool kids visiting college campus)
South Korean Ferry (high school kids on a field trip)

That video of that poor little girl. Glad at least she has her uncle and other relatives.

I suspect her relatives are telling her that her family is recovering and can't see her right now.

But I'm sure she's already aware that something isn't right. After a day or two passes, of her calling for her family and they never come. She will soon catch on what's going on. Kids that age are old enough to figure it out but her relatives don't want to tell her because of the impact it will do to her mentally and physically, when she is already recovering from the trauma of the accident. It's such a heartbreaking situation.

Quit being such a punk. And, no...my ancestors came over on a big ship before WWII.

This particular South Korean ferry is maybe one you wouldn't expect this type of accident on. But, a lot of third-world country ferries are overloaded, completely lack on any safety protocols, and the ship and/or equipment is in bad condition. They get on the high seas and they can get in trouble...especially in bad weather. So, in general, I wouldn't get on one of those ferries unless I had to as a third-world citizen and it was my only source of transportation...which for a lot of them it is the only option.

Picture of the little girl and the moment of her rescue.

The girl is actually 5 years old in standard American age. She's 6 years old in Korean age (which counts the birth year as "year 1")

Did they send scuba divers to check those air pockets?

Apparently weather issues, and the ocean current conditions have constantly disturbed their attempts. There was a quote from one of the coast guard members saying he doesn't expect to find anyone alive at this point.

I know it's a terrible situation, and the likeliest cause is human error, which blame would lay with the captain, but wait until the facts of the investigation come out before pointing fingers and calling the lynch mob.

I hope there are more survivors. RIP to the victims.

I wasn't trying to be a punk... but I'm sure a ship from the 1930's was much safer just because it was big.

Unless you've been living under a rock.... South Korea is no longer a third-world country so I don't know why you feel the need to mention that. Also, South Korea is surrounded mostly by water so ferries are a major source of transportation by default not because they're a "third-world" country.

Anyways, this is a terrible situation and RIP to those lost and I hope there are more survivors.
