This exactly. To go back to my DS9 love again: Tywin is the same style of villain as Gul Dukat. A charismatic guy who's clearly a (figurative) b*stard, but you kinda can't help but like him anyway.
To the person that pointed out that the show was better than the books, this is exactly why you are wrong. In defense of the show, it is impossible for them to give you a complete synopsis of previous events and backgrounds of characters though That one conversation with the Red Viper and Tywin/Cercei doesn't do justice for the brutal massacre of Oberyn's sister and her baby as is documented in westeros. There is just so much more behind the characters. That being said the show is great. Book 3>>>>>>Show, but I think the show will do a better job of everything after (so far revealed) as GURM seems to have lost his touch and gotten obsessed with adding useless things to the books.
Calling someone a villain is subjective in their world. Only a couple of clear off the bat ones like Joffrey and the Mountain, but by the sins revealed against the Ellia + her baby, and Robb Stark, he is deff. a villain. He just approaches it in a relatable way unlike Joffrey and the Mountain who do it with brutality and arrogance.
Same here. I absolutely cannot understand how viewers can get into this show so much and not crack the books open. Is the country that anti-reading?
What really surprises me is that even the actors have no idea about the books. The guy that plays Reek (aka Theon Greyjoy) had a practical joke played on him where the producers told him his character was getting killed off in Season 2. He was really upset by it - of course, if he'd read the books, he'd know he'd still be alive as he was crucial for the plot (as he still is now, in Season 4!). You'd think they would read ahead to get a little career planning perspective, lol.
I agree the first 3 books are true page turners. Although I read them before the show. I must say I found a feast for crows a difficult read, so much Cersei. Other than Arya and Brienne's chapters, I rarely had a problem putting it down. I would suggest just getting the cliff notes on that one LOL.
I have read all the books, my cousin who has not, does research on A Wiki of Ice and Fire to find out the backgrounds on the characters. Its a very detailed site, but you have to be careful and not read too much. The History and Lore videos are helpful too. You can find most of them on youtube.
Yeah, I've been very careful to call someone a villain, but there is no doubt that Tywin is one. The other post who mentioned Gul Dukat was brilliant. Sure, he's likable and has redeeming moments and is a badass in his on right, but he's evil at his core. Like Dukat, Tywin wants power and glory for himself and his family name and he couldn't care less about what brutality is done in his name or by his hand in order to achieve that. In the earlier season where he was with Arya he sat in a room and drank and ate while men were brutally tortured below him. He's ordered the violent death of children, gang rapes, etc. He's evil.
Agreed. A Feast for Crows was horrible. I'm considering rereading the series and will straight up skip AFFC.
Dear non book readers, I really feel sorry for you. There is a special place in my heart that bleeds for you as if nicked by Valyrian steel. No matter how hard you try or how adamant you are...no matter how eloquently you plead your case like Ned Stark and let your desires be known or throw a Joffrey Lannister sized hissy fit, there are people who still intentionally or unintentionally spoil the show for you. At the end of the day, you either wind up beheaded or poisoned, but whether it is a slow death or a swift one, the end result is still the same. I understand that you want to go online and discuss an awesome show and bounce ideas off of other people who are just as clueless as you are and I genuinely believe that is your right. I enjoy reading your speculative thoughts and suspicions and yet don't feel any burning desire to correct you when it is far off base or congratulate you on your unparalleled super sleuth detective work. This is an awesome show that in my opinion is the best on TV right now and only getting better, which is quite frankly scary because it was already soooo good. Perhaps there is no safe place on the internet to safely do this without finding out something that you didn't want to know. I feel for you. You shouldn't have to do this, I know, but either read the books or wade through the internet at your own risk. Just so you know, the books are phenomenal. Sincerely, Empathetic Observer That Has Never Understood Why Some Book Readers Don't Discuss Aspects of the Book in the Other Thread Specifically Created for Such Conversation
I feel like I was part of the few not spoiled by the Joffrey death. I really had no idea he was going to die. I didn't even realize there was going to be a wedding so soon. I didn't even know they called it the Purple Wedding until recently. I guess I have been really lucky or just diligently avoiding the internet until I have watched an episode. Even when I go to youtube for reviews and book comparisons I dare not venture into the comment section. I've been really lucky. Furthermore, I hope Shae is finally gone. this chick is ultra thirsty.
Its not so much all the books in general...but at least read book 3 (Storm of Swords!!!!). I would never recommend reading A Feast For Crowes though.
This is me as well, I was in the exact same boat. I never watched GoT at all until I finally got a wild hair about a month ago, and then zipped right through all three seasons in about 2 weeks. Ordinarily I would have already read the books, but in this case I have not. And once I started watching the show, and taking it all in that way, I made a conscious decision to avoid the books and as many spoilers as possible. More than likely I will go back and read all the books once the series is done, I think I will wait that long, or at least I will try. But so far so good, I have been spoiler-free for everything.. heck, I didn't even know about the 'Red Wedding' until it actually happened in front of my eyes! And I definitely did not expect Joffrey to die so quickly. So, crossing my fingers to be able to keep on avoiding the info I shouldn't be seeing
A feast for crows definitely steered clear of most people's favorite characters, but its got plenty of big, huge-ass shocking new storylines that will affect the rest of the books. I would recommend reading it.
Well, they have used 2 different actors for him before. And he's be recast again for this season so make that 3. I guess we should be seeing him again sometime soon.
I don't think their personalities are similar. Dukat was an egomaniac who wanted the approval of his enemies. Tywin would only demand approval if that could somehow be leveraged into money or power. He could care less about what other people thought personally but rather that they acted with fear or awe.
I didn't read Potter either. And why the **** are people talking about characters in future books who are still alive? This is a non-spoiler thread. The other thread is for people such as the goofballs who like to give details. You're literate and cool. +1 INTERNET POINT AWARDED
