Those were my thoughts as well. Maybe the whole thing was poisoned. The king was taking the first bite regardless.

Also, like others have said...there's a reason everybody despised Joffrey - because Gleeson acted the hell out of that role. Great job, sir.

The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking this was a coordinated effort.

1.) The fool was hanging out in the gardens with Sansa, the one place you can go and not have eyes on you. Would be the perfect place to plot a murder.

2.) Old Lady Tyrell surely never wanted to see Margaery tormented under Joffrey for the rest of her life, despite the status of Queen and what it would bring to the family. Perhaps she conspired with Varys, the fool, Sansa, and others to orchestrate it.

3.) Sansa is not a killer by nature, but after what Joffrey did to her family, if somebody put the poison in her hands, she'd at least have to consider it as the rightful thing to do to prevent furthering suffering.

4.) Sansa retrieved the Goblet for Tyrion, giving her a couple seconds to slip the poison in.

Altenatively, as others have suggested... Oberyn could have had the pie poisoned in at attempt to kill everyone at the table.

The link posted from reddit closes the case on the poisoning of King Joffrey.

Curiosity got the best of me and I clicked on it. While it shows clearly who was the culprit, it does contain a major spoiler about who was also involved.

Good detective work there. I had forgotten about some of the things that happened in episode 1 that gave more hints. But I was on the right track. :)

Yeah, it uses the evidence from the first two episodes. So if you have seen them it won't really be a spoiler its just breaking it down for you. But again we love our GoT so look at your discretion. :)

You can't expect rational thought from an irrational person. Cersi is many things; cunning, evil, beautiful, greedy, etc.... but rational is not one of them.

I did too, and it was all stuff contained in the episodes. so I don't see why it is a spoiler...just detective work, as you said.

My question: why did the culprit need to go to those lengths to do the job?

I'm pretty sure Tywin, as Hand of the King, is acting regent pending the crowning of Tommen (younger brother of Joffrey) as king.

Trying hard not to see any spoilers but I'm gonna guess Cersi killed him , mainly because no one else is and she would be the last expected .

I don't think it would work that way. The only reason Ned Stark was going to be regent was because Robert Baratheon specifically willed it. Without that letter Ned had no claim as hand to sit on the throne with the death of Robert. Recall that the claim against Ned that got him killed was that he tried to usurp the throne.

I believe that with Joffrey dead and the other son next in line, Cersei remains as queen regent until her son comes of age.

And what would she have to gain by killing her incest son?

Well, she doesn't lose the Queen Bee spot to Margaery (however it's spelled). Perhaps she would rather have had him dead than 'lose him', and consequently, her own seat of power.

I doubt it though, as she received some sort of 'prophecy' or something when she was young, stating that she would outlive her children - in other words, according to the prophecy, the longer her children live, the longer she would live for sure. So logically she would do everything in her power to make sure her children survive as long as possible.
