Looking forward to how the Tyrells will deal with this. Margaery wants to be queen, but now Tommen is king? The Tyrells have been brought into King's Landing, they aren't going to give up their reputation within the city without a fight.

Trying to think of some unobvious candidates..Littlefinger? He has the title of Harrenhal, needs to marry Catelyn's sister to get his lands and armies. But he also needs chaos and confusion in Kings Landing, and Littlefinger thrives on chaos. Also, Sansa was spirited away by that fat knight, and Littlefinger has always wanted Sansa Stark, maybe the fat knight is in Littlefinger's employ, and the murder of Joffrey was to incapacitate both the Lannisters and Tyrells politically and during the feast, whilst getting Sansa out of the capital and up north.

Jack Gleeson of Game of Thrones: 5 Things to Know
    http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20806397,00.html

After three years of mounting schadenfreude, King Joffrey Baratheon, son of Queen Cersei and her brother Jaime Lannister, finally got what he deserved when he was fatally poisoned at his own wedding reception.

While Game of Thrones fans cheer Joffrey's gruesome fate, they must also say goodbye to the talented actor who took utter delight in his almost gleeful portrayal of the evil king.

Here are five things to know about Jack Gleeson:

    1. The 21-year-old is from Cork, Ireland, and began acting when he was 7 years old, in the Irish Independent Theater Workshop.

    2. He is an academic at heart, and intends to leave acting now that his reign as Joffrey is over. Gleeson received a scholarship to study theology and philosophy at prestigious Trinity University. He told the Irish Independent, "The lifestyle that comes with being an actor in a successful TV show isn't something I gravitate towards."

    3. The most horrible thing he's ever done was read his sister's diary when he was 7 (she was 13).

    4. In taking on Joffrey, he looked to Gladiator and FernGully for inspiration."Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus in Gladiator; certainly for my characterization of Joffrey, that had a big impact, the smirk," he told Entertainment Weekly. "And the monster Hexxus from FernGully, certainly as a childhood fear that was a big one."

    5. He is actually nothing like his TV character and was one of the most courteous people on set. Once the cameras stopped rolling, Gleeson would apologize to extras he had to berate while playing Joffrey.

Says costar Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell), "He is one of the most gentle, intelligent, courteous, thoughtful people that I have met, like in life. He's a really really special guy. He's also really smart. He's one of those people that, despite them being much younger than you, you're like, 'This guy's smarter than me. Just accept it.'"

Adds Lena Headey, who plays Cersei, "Jack is the biggest diva. No, I'm kidding. He is perhaps the kindest, most generous person on set."

Love Jack Gleeson as an actor. In a show full of great acting he didn't take a back seat to anyone. He made everyone truly despise King Joffrey.

If I had to bet I would pick the Tyrells as the one to poison Joffrey. But only if Margarey gets to be queen. In that case they have the most to benefit.

I'm hoping its Sansa, but it sounds a little far fetched.

That fat knight we know truly hated Joffrey and likes Sansa, but can he pull off something like this. He seemed a little too quick on the ball to get Sansa out of that party.

Oberyn could be it. But I don't think this would be his style. I don't think he would kill a kid, plus he seems like he would want everyone to know if he did something like that.

Dark horse candidate - Varys? Why was he in such a hurry to get out of that party?

Possible its not the wine at all? Could it be the pie? Though it would be difficult to poison that individual piece of pie.

No way the chick becomes queen. When Robert Baratheon died at the beginning of the series, the crown was to pass to Ned Stark to hold as regent until his son came of age. Women can't inherit the throne it seems in GOT. Cersei was only queen regent.

So now it goes to the other Lannister son.

So, who killed Joffrey? Let's look at the possibilities:

    1) Tyrion Lannister: listed first because he was arrested for it as the season ended. No chance he did it.

    2) The Tyrells: Seems risky for them. Joffrey's death costs them the throne and if they were discovered would bring all out war against their house. They may have plans in place that would make it worth their while, but it seems incredibly risky for them.

    3) The Martells: They hate the Lannisters. Still, Joffrey would be the wrong subject of their attention. They hate Tywin. Killing Joffrey just places another Lannister/Baratheon on the throne. It's the house Lannister they want to deal with, not the throne specifically.

    4) Varys: He serves the realm as he has said and we know now that he has ties to the Mother of Dragons, whether she actually knows that or not. Perhaps this was him protecting the realm while sowing discourse? The "war is over" kept getting repeated. Varys doesn't want peace in Westeros.

    5) Sansa Stark: No chance. She hates Joffrey and all the Lannisters of course, but she isn't cruel or plotting. This would be out of her league.

    6) Cersei: The dark horse candidate. Joffrey's wedding costs Cersei the title of Queen Regent. Killing Joffrey (and perhaps Margaery as well as the win looked like it came from her side?) would put the brother on the throne and she would rule in his stead. Joffrey was an animal and had even treated her with disrespect. Still, would she kill her child?

    7) Littlefinger: He wasn't in this episode, but it looked like the fool grabbed Sansa to escape as if he knew what was coming. We know Littlefinger has his eyes on the throne and on Sansa. Did he orchestrate this to kill the King and get Sansa out of the capital to set some plan in motion? Little evidence and little motive specifically to kill Joffrey it would seem.

    8) Melissandre: Does she have an agent that serves the God of Light that was able to kill Joffrey to help prove her magic?

    9) Last but not least, an unknown agent: Someone we don't know about or that is perhaps irrelevant but killed the king for some purpose and motive yet to be uncovered.

Sansa had just watched Joffrey giggling like an idiot at the most horrific and offensive display with the dwarf show, especially bad due to the wolf's head bit. I doubt it was her idea, but I suspect she was given the poison and only had to wait for an opportunity. And then Joffrey torments Tyrion, and kicks his own goblet under the table, giving her the perfect moment. Sansa likely added the poison to the goblet in that moment when she picked it up and handed it to Tyrion.

She has no love for Tyrion really, and if Joffrey's death also results in Tyrion being held responsible, then she would be free of them both.

Weddings and death.. if I lived in that world, I might just decide to stay single..

Anyway, just as an aside, I thought that final segment was very powerful, especially not knowing what was about to happen. As Joffrey enjoyed the awful display, the camera lingered on several different characters, and all of them seemed to be realizing the depth of hell the Kingdom was about to endure under Joffrey's reign. A vicious sadistic bully as king would not be good for the kingdom, and you could see that written in all of their faces. Great acting all the way around.

While I say Sansa is my official guess, heck I wouldn't even be surprised if it turned out to be Tywinn.

I say no way on Sansa. It's just who she is.

Anyway, your other point about that scene is so accurate. More importantly though, you could tell the nature of the each character shown. Where Cersei was smiling and many of the Lannister loyalists were laughing and carrying on, the Tyrells, the Martells, Sansa, Tyrion, Varys...they looked some combination of disturbed, sad and disgusted all at once.

My final guess is that it was the Tyrells.

The wife was downright gleeful when it all went down last night but I knew it was going to throw Tyrion in hot water.

My guess is prince Oberyn. There's no way it's the Tyrells, the marriage was never consummated so Margery wouldn't have any power.

Motive and opportunity is important here...

When did Oberyn have the opportunity to poison him?

I know Oberyn seems like an obvious and likely candidate here, but why would he want to kill Joffrey? His biggest beef is with Tywin. How does killing Joffrey (who is technically a Baratheon) avenge his sister?

Agreed. Like I said in my list, the Martells don't really have anything to gain by killing Joffrey who is two steps removed from the head source of their frustration. I mean if there were no other heir then perhaps it would make sense as it would hurt Tywin, but that's not the case.

There's no reason to think that Tywin is even particularly fond of Joffrey.

By the way, no one has commentated on the awesome line that Loras delivered to Jamie. Ha!

By the way, I watched this episode with someone last night that ruined the surprise for me by saying "I can't wait to watch this episode! This is the one where Joffrey dies!"

Must be Tywin, that's how he operates - mysterious and surprising. On what motive? Let's wait until we see the new king. There was no hint given on the trailer for next episode.

Oh man I would be pretty upset (Ofcourse i have read the books so there was no surprise for me there). It is terrible if people spoil the ending to episodes or series.

I get the feeling the 2 threads are working: most book readers post their thoughts in the spoilered thread, and the non-book readers can brainstorm in this thread.

It was pretty annoying. The individual kept dropping these little "nuggets" of information throughout the show as well that were obvious spoilers but was pretending like they were just their own thoughts.
