Can Dwight and Bev really mask this team's horrid defense?

one horrible thing we always do on defense is help on penetration so daam much. u dont need to swarm the paint with every single player and leave 2 open 3pters for the other team. that part of the defense is gonna be exposed to hell and back in the 2nd round

i think that's part of mchale's gameplan, cuz i remember the same thing when we had scola and hayes and lowry. same team, mainly rubio and love. rubio single handedely picked apart the rockets defense, almost always they would work the ball around, swing it to the other sdie where there's an open guy at the 3pt line.

but dwight and bev will get the defense back to where it was, that is if everyone doesnt have a sore vagina. 50pts for brewer. that's one of the worst things the rockets did this season. our pathetic-ness will be exposed in the playoffs

You SERIOUSLY think that 6'1 Beverley is going to guard a 6'9" small forward? Why not ask him to guard Noah or Marc Gasol while you're at it.

I get the love for Beverley, he's a really good perimeter guard, but the guy isn't freaking Michael Jordan on defense. He's not stopping a small/power forward.

We have a handful of guys that are expected to stop a player like Brewer... Parsons, Casspi, Hamilton and Garcia. NONE of our other wing players have the length or strength to guard Brewer.

Thinking that Beverley would have made ANY difference if he was guarding Brewer goes past wishful thinking, it's delusional.

You're so caught up in the Lin vs. Bev narrative that you can't even see/think clearly. Why would I come at you with some garbage about Lin? I've also never said Bev shut down Westbrook in the playoffs last postseason.

What I AM saying -- and the sentiment increasingly shared by most coaches, announcers, commentators, sports writers and media personalities -- is that this team is very different defensively WITH Bev than it is without him. You've posted in multiple threads that the defensive drop-off has nothing to do with Bev b/c he doesn't make a difference in the first place. I'm simply saying that you'd have a difficult time finding people who would agree with you.

Not sure why that is so upsetting.

Google "Patrick Beverley defense" and you will see who all of "you people" are.
    https://www.google.com/#q=patrick+beverley+defense&start=10.

Are delusion and denial mandatory for Lin-fan-sanity? Looks like "you people" are way out of touch with reality.

It's an attitude that is lacking from this team ever since Beverley and Howard have been absent, especially Beverley. The team without them just doesn't have the attitude that defense needs to come first.

We are usually pretty balanced with our offense and defense with our offense shining more because of our personnel, but with Howard and Beverley, our identity is balanced. Omer can only do so much for our defense. There are some games where he has to pick up the ball handler, help out the post, box out his man then be the only one fighting for the rebounds. You could see his frustration when he has to do everything and the rest of the team can't even secure the rebound. I really feel for the guy. He always gives the effort.

We just need to mature as a team. Once we learn that defense needs to come first and defense will make offense easier then we will have moments like these games. Giving up career nights to role player and such.

^I completely agree with this. Like a lot of people are saying on both sides, Bev can't guard the opposing small forwards or even bigger guards but his defensive mentality is contagious and the whole team feeds off of it.

Bev may not be a super-star player or even a super defender individually but his attitude is unmatched on this roster. And before the LOF's jump on me, no I don't believe Beverley is a better player than lin and perhaps a worse one-on-one defender but he can certainly compliment him well while they are both in the game. His main utility is his mental effect on his teammates. After all a defensive point guard is useful but the 3, 4 and 5 are the true barometer of a solid team defense.

Without Dwight and Bev, this is last year's team on both ends of the court. Last year's offense and defense before Bev arrived in January or February. We sucked defensively then. We suck defensively now. Mainly because when Asik is out there is no pivot on this team that can stop anything. Jones and DMo are simply not capable of playing the defensive 5. We got a little spurt with Jones in the middle tonight on one rotation simply because we were ultra-small and we got a couple shots to go down. But we have seen this act over and over. There is nobody to man the middle defensively if Asik or Dwight isn't in there. That is the single reason why DMo and Jones had the worst +/- on the team in this game. They are horrible in tandem.

For the life of me, I don't understand why McHale continues to run them both out there together under any circumstances. We're better off to experiment with a rotation then to put both guys out there together. Put one of them in the middle and then put a true shooter at the 4 so they can actually do something offensively to offset the porous paint D which we already know is coming.

Defense is a team effort, so I'm sure D12 and PB can pick up some of the slack when a SG or PG blows past somebody, but come playoff time EVERYBODY better pick up their individual D or sit your sorry ass on the bench

If I believe the media then Howard was washed up because of last year and Leonard is a top 15 guy

It's a 10% difference Defensively from bev to Lin

It's a big difference offensively from bev to Lin with the starting unit, why?, 2 TO less with bev in (doesn't need the ball in his hand)

Do we need bev? Of course, but I refuse to believe he plays great defense, he's above avg.

Bevs pressure defense Gets him in trouble so much, because he ends up behind the play, but Howard cleans it up after he gets beat

Someone else said, bev hides hardens lack of defense, are you kidding me, how the hell does a 6' PG hides a SG's lack of defense

Parsons and harden are given up 25+ a game without Howard

Lin and caanon have been solid Defensively (offensively is another story)

After watching the past 8 games Howard has pasted harden as the 1 guy on this team (

Without Howard, all I see is layups everywhere on defense

We have no half court offense without Howard (what you need to win in the playoffs)

Howard is the heart and soul of this team

Lol don't get your panties up in a wad bro. It was just some internet need trolling lin fans by using the "anyone but lin" argument. Does it have to be logical in any way? No...

At least now ppl can recognize Howard's impact on this team. We would not be top 4 in the west if we didn't sign him up.

Don't under rate Bev's defense also. His also a perfect fit for a PG when Harden is on the court.

Actually you seem to be the one caught up in the Lin v. Bev narrative. The poster you replied to doesn't even like Lin.

He's merely saying Bev isn't as great as some people think he is and with Dwight back we won't have to worry.

He didn't even mention Lin initially but some posters immediately assumed so and attacked him. And in his second post he actually bashes Lin too.

Well, without Dwight this team is going nowhere fast - without Bev, but with Dwight they would be fine.
