Hakeem can be legitimately argued top 3 without even going into era's where the competition was lol. Jordan says it's Hakeem. I don't think this point is a simple fact.

    Agreed with the rest though.

He is most definitely biased in baseball. I'm not sure if he's a Red Sox or Mets fan, but it's one of the two.

We will always disagree on issues related to the Texans.

As for the Dream , we walk the same path.

Surprised so many like Matt Thomas, he sounds like a radio guy who just so happens to do sports. Charlie the opposite.

I like CP's condescending attitude towards idiot callers. It's the same attitude I have towards some of the posters here with dumbass posts. Ex: Yao is better than Kareem, LOF, Schaub is elite (sigh),Texan Super Bowl contenders, etc

You can't go wrong with MAD radio and CP. Everyone else is .....

For a 5 year period you could make a case that Biggio was one of the five best player in the baseball.

I put Bill James above CP and justtxyank and he said:

Biggio is a darling in Bill James WIN SHARE stat, but that one barely favors him over Alomar and is largely influenced by the fact that Biggio got and extra 2000 at bats to pad his numbers. On a per at bat basis, Alomar beats Biggio in the important stats.

Alomar was also a much better fielder which Bill James flawed WS stat doesn't account for properly.

That said, it's close enough. It doesn't bother me either way honestly. I love Biggio and have always preferred him to Bagwell.

Yes, this is my very problem with Charlie.

Overall I think Houston radio NEEDS a guy like Charlie to lend some of the national perception towards Houston sports. But you also have to understand that the national perception by its very nature is biased AGAINST Houston sports. They don't like us rising up to overtake the carpetbaggers. They don't like us forming a new identity, a culture of winning. They do subtle things everywhere to undermine our victories. The whole "Michael Jordan was playing baseball when the Rockets won". The discounting of achievements of our brightest sports figures like Hakeem, Bagwell, Biggio, Moon, and Campbell. These are things that I put on Charlie that make him far from "unbiased", but far above some of the horrible national radio announcers like Colin Cowherd who continue their crusades to, say, keep Biggio out of the Hall of Fame.

But you need one person like that in this radio market to at least talk down some of the ridiculous homers out there who would rewrite history if they had it their way. I consider myself very slightly more biased towards Houston than your ideal unbiased fan, and even I would have Biggio below Alomar (but above Sandberg) in the all-time discussion. I watched a TON of baseball in the 90's. To me the eye test is good enough. But I do love the fact that a national guy like Bill James (I have read his entire abstract almost the whole way through) to step up to the plate in favor of Biggio. When it comes to Hakeem I am much more rose-colored in my perspective. I have always disagreed vehemently with the idea that "you have to judge each player based on their era". Bull****. Bill Russell was 6'9 grabbing balls out of the air that were shot by a bunch of Jimmy Chitwoods. Hakeem would have eaten his lunch. Wilt Chamberlain we dunno about, but I dare you to tell me he could have averaged his numbers in a league that also had Ewing, Mourning, Robinson, and Dream. No way. I put Dream at #3 on my all time list, for both his defensive and offensive prowess, behind Jordan and Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

To me there are very objective ways to measure the level of play in some sports. In baseball we know from speedgun measurements that the average pitch speed has been constant since about the mid-50's. All we have then, is the knowledge that prior to the late 40's the sport was completely segregated, and then prior to 1969 the mound was 5 inches higher (thanks, Bob Gibson). So, if you want to compare performances in the modern era, that's where you start. In basketball it's harder, you have to rely a bit more on physical attributes of draft picks followed closely by the eye test. I would contend that the mid-80's is probably the time where you can start to compare stats fairly with the modern era. The 3pt shot had been in play for enough time, and you also had those physical specimens like Magic, Kareem, Sampson around where you could say, "Okay, so they may not be as fast or strong as the players today, but could they still get away with their signature moves that made them so effective?" And for that era of players, the answer is a resounding YES. It's like Dirk Nowitzki or Tim Duncan. Today they're old guys, but speed is not the be-all end-all in basketball. It's all about repeatability and indefensibility. Nobody is blocking Dirk's fadeaway. Similarly, nobody is blocking the skyhook. Players in the 90's slowly phased in more athleticism but simultaneously started to phase out some skills like the post-game and the midrange shot which today are effectively endangered species.

So in summation, Charlie P is a national host in a local town, but because he's been here so long he isn't nearly as bad as your usual national host. I like him. I think we need him. He's certainly more knowledgeable and has an eye towards history compared to the other radio hosts. But I have stated my objections above towards his more "unbiased" perspective in terms of all-time rankings. I will reserve a proper defense for Hakeem at the #3 all time spot for a later thread.

Wait, so is it changed yet? or no, i haven't tuned in these couple days to find out...but if so, this will be difficult. I usually tune in at work in the morning and start mad radio on 610 until MT comes on at 2...this will ruin my schedule

MT has only been coming on at 2 for the last 6-7 months.

Him coming on at 11 or noon was the norm before the change.... and THAT ruined people's schedules.

I think most of the time, I'd rather hear a horse eating chiclets on air for 12 hours than 3 hours of Jay Mohr doing Serpico voice.

I admit that I crack up to his Walken impression. "Moose suit!"

But, he certainly won't be missed once MT is back at the usual time.

I was wondering if Jay Mohr's show would be on tape delay if moved. Doesn't matter since the Astros will be on most of the time, which is why CP is moving to 2-6.
