Just stop it, Morey made a mistake. He's actually made many mistakes but this one just sticks out. Making excuses like "the jury is still out" comes across as silly

Imagine if Presti gave Harden his max contract extension and our guard rotation was Dragic, NBDL scrub, and a player to be named later instead.

Player options are just not good for gms unless the player is a sure fire star. If the player become good, they opt out for a better one. If they don't then they opt in and the contract is hard to move.

So if the Rockets can make it to the Finals and actually win in the next 3 years then this would still be considered as a mistake that cost the team a dynasty? Or if Dragic, God forbid, has a career-ending injury next year would it still be such a regrettable decision then?

The jury's still out is because the player and the team needs to let it run its course until something momentous (i.e. the Rockets or Dragic winning a championship) happens.

Dragic was and is better than both the guys we have now, and he gets paid less than one of them.

There may have been good reasons to pass on Dragic, but at the end of the day, it's not about having good reasons, it's about being right.

Of course, it could still work out ok for us in the next couple offseasons. Maybe we can get him in 2015.

This decision being made on the basis of a player option disappoints me. When the Rockets acquire Dragic, I felt Morey was onto a very good, young, promising point guard, who just needed a change of scenery and more playing time to blossom. A point guard who was mentored by a three time MVP in Steve Nash. The young Dragic did not disappoint in his time in Houston. He did not show any signs of bad character, locker room troubles, off court issues. I do not think Morey truly ever valued him, as he was pretty much a "throw in" player in the trade that did not happen with Gasol. He was also let go for nothing in return.

Look, Dragic looks great this year in Phoenix and he is the man there, but he is averaging nearly 15 shots a game, that's almost Lin + Beverley's total shots combined. In Houston, either he gets maybe 10-12 shots a game and doesn't look nearly as good, or he's taking shots away from Harden or Howard. In 3 games in April, AB is averaging 16 shots per game and also averaging around 19.7 pts per game. PB takes 8 shots a game and Lin takes 9.

Would you rather a Dragic, AB, Lin, or PB taking 15 shots every night or would you rather Harden and Howard have those shots? And if Dragic was here and averaging 9 shots per night, his PPG would be around 12.9, assuming all else is equal, not exactly world-beating numbers.

    I disagree.

I believe management decisions are about making the correct decisions at the time and living with the outcomes. I would much rather Morey take the most logical course with the most flexibility than make an illogical decision on the hope a gamble doesn't kill you.

If there's a peanut under 3 shells and you give me 6-1 odds, I'll take that bet every day of the week whether I end up broke or not because the odds are simply in my favor.

Morey tries to stack the odds in his favor, and over the last 3 years he's come out ahead. That's all you can ask of a good GM.

Wish we kept him, but you never know.

Goran was very mediocre last year on Phoenix and maybe we would've traded him. Now he's Goransanity.

PG's seem to be the most volatile commodities in the NBA these days. Look at the ups and downs of Lin, Lowry, and Brooks.

That's true, but you can never know what odds you are getting under a given shell.

Under the Goran shell, some people saw much better odds than Morey did. I'm guessing Morey placed very low odds that he would get better. Other scouts may have had a different opinion. Goran showed a lot of the same qualities Jeremy Lin showed in NY.

I agree with your point, but that doesn't mean Morey didn't make a mistake. He's probably learning from it.

It sucks we couldn't get him to stay but it was his decision to walk out. Anyways we have 2 superstars: Harden and Howard. Can't too much about our "misfortune". :p

We could have offered him that 4th year.

All of you guys saying he wouldn't have flourished in this offense are crazy. Yes he prefers to be the primary ball handler but he can shoot well enough to play off the ball as well...

With most GM's you win some and you lose some. With Morey, you win some and you win some others a little less. It is what it is.

And unfortunately for the Suns, they gave Frye that contract.

But doesn't Dragic's contract with the player option run into 2016, the year aldrich / Love / Rondo are all free agents? And Lin / Asik are also free agents? It was more of a strategic move for sure, it has backfired so far, but if we land a marquee FA, it'll seem alright ;)

Yes, he has no problem being a spot up shooter.

It's a player option, and if Dragic sucked here, he most certainly would have exercised it.

So yeah, it would have been risky.

Who gives a ****. This is in the past; move on. It has been almost 2 complete seasons and we are still talking about it as if we are lottery bound since we didn't keep Dragic. I really like what he brought to the team. He is a good player. I don't care that he isn't here anymore because we are by far the superior team over the Suns.
