I'm thinking of trying out for the Rockets starting PG ala John Starks. Can I count on you guys to have my back? I got cut from my middle school JV team but on the plus side I don't have pressure to live up to anything.

Why do you think Canaan is quick? He certainly is not Lin quick. Is he average NBA point guard quick? Or even close? He has gotten into the lane a couple of times against back up point guards, but how does that translate in minutes against NBA starting point guards?

This is an incredibly poorly thought out thread, and its base precept is completely faulty.

What evidence do you have that Canaan is not as quick as Lin?

Morey's statement that Lin had the fastest first step on the team last season?

That one is really really poor for the PG position.

That one is like horrendously bad. See Harden and Lin.

Of course Morey is going to say that, just trying to bump up his trade value

Ah yes. Using SportVU, which is the basis for Morey's evaluation, every team in the league can check out his analysis this season.

    jtr,

Do you think his three point percentage below 30% is representative of his skill at three point shooting going forward or a relic of small sample size and microscopic experience against NBA closeouts?

If not, what would be your best guess of what he will shoot from 3 point range in his next 500 minutes of action?

Canaan, I believe, will soon migrate his 3PT% towards the league average of ~35%. He is to good of a shooter not to, and the Rockets offense will open up any number of wide open looks for him. Canaan will indeed be useful, I would be stupid to suggest otherwise since Morey the Master signed him to a contract. He will probably be a serviceable point guard in the future, and possibly shoot ~40% from beyond the arc. Just speculation on my part. Nothing more.

I'm pretty sure he was inferring that the sample size is way too small to make any kind of judgement on Canaan's abilities (e.g. quickness). Do we know for certain that Canaan has or has not been measured with the accelerometer that determined Lin had such a quick first step? Etc. He does seem quick but he's close to the ground and that can be deceiving.

Yeah I did read it.... You pretty much said Canaan is a good to great shooter... He has shown ability to penetrate and even made a clutch 3point shot with a defender all over him last night... He looks very quick and fearless.. So all together better than Lin right?

Do you consider his effectiveness at the rim probably will not get worse than it is now?

You, like I, are projecting his performance into sometime in the future. Can we both agree that he is not there yet?

As Canaan gains experience, his effectiveness at the rim will improve. He is not strong, but has a 40" vertical leap. However I do not see him becoming as effective as Harden or Lin. Just speculation on my part.

Yes we do agree! Canaan is nowhere near being there yet.... Probably wont be a while until he is IF he is... Sometimes these things are unpredictable and players who think are going to be great (LIN) are not and players who we think are probably not going to be very good (Beverley) actually are.... Canaan has a long way to go but this is not about that. This is about Lin playing so awful that even a rookie like Canaan is showing more positives... I just don't feel good with Lin out there as the starter... Truth is we have no true starting pg with Beverley out... Just back up pg's playing starters... That's why I'm all for Canaan getting a chance...
