He just played too close to the line (probably expecting an inside run) and he didn't read the outside route fast enough before wandering into the tackle that was doubling Clowney. Good play call and execution by the offense, poor play call by the defense.
I'm sure he was gassed, it is known to happen to him and it was OT, I just think on this particular play either he was playing it completely wrong, or he was supposed to be 2 gapping in which you have to stay disciplined and can't really get off the line because you have 2 responsibilities. That's why I like Wade Phillips system so much. In a one gap, you are faster and have to think a lot less so you can just make plays. It's obviously not without it's drawbacks, but a one gap system allows dynamic players to explode off the line damn near every down rather than having to sit back and wait for the play to develop and then react.
When we watch football, 99.9999999999999999% of the time, we're following the ball - and players are always active around the ball. As a result, we become accustomed to seeing maximum effort 100% of the time. On those rare occasions when we lock-in and watch a single lineman play multiple snaps, we sometimes see something we're not accustomed to: a player not being 100% active. And that's because, again, 99.9999999999999999% of the time, we're following the ball - and players are always active around the ball. I really don't think it's terribly common for players to go 100% on each and every snap, specifically snaps going a different way. Do you think a CB on Clowney's side is ripping off a 4.3 burn to make a play on the other side of the field? Watch offensive linemen once the play moves out of their zone – lots of standing around and watching… And god forbid if any of the players are gassed, right? I’m not pro-Clowney, per se - Bridgewater has as much appeal to me, frankly. (And I went to A&M so… there’s that.) But I think we fill waaaaaay too much of this four-month waiting period with meaningless minutiae.
Sure, Clowney did a poor job at setting the edge...but look at what he does to guard with minimal effort...a strong push and the guard almost takes out his tackle...
The play was pretty much over by then anyway, the defensive play call pretty much ensured a TD unless the LB had played a bit further away from the line and was able to get out and set the edge, forcing the RB back inside where Clowney was holding down double gap responsibilities and that's not really a fair expectation. Even if they had called a single gap play where Clowney had shot the C gap to set the edge, it probably results in a TD, the very next run play that's the call and the RB gashed them through the B gap. Mizzu was a REALLY good football team last year
I think the implication was that he pushed the guard aside, but that's not really what happened either. The second the guard got in front of Clowney and the LB ran into the double team, the play was over and it was a TD. Which is really to say that the second that whoever calls the defensive plays for South Carolina called in the play, it was over and it was a TD.
To be totally honest, it looks as if it is just a great job by the Mizzou O-line. The tackle chips off Clowney to go after the 'backer, who to me, looks like he either reacted late, or blew his edge-setting responsibility. Either way, that hesitation allowed the tackle to execute a nice double and chip from Clowney to the 'backer.

No flip flopping, Bridgewater is by far and away the best qb in the draft. I have no faith in the Texans brass making the right decision on qbs. If its not Bridgewater, Id much rather get Clowney
Yeah, I dont exactly understand what Clowney will be doing at his pro day...Seems like a totally pointless session.
