oohhh la la - look at mister moneybagz making it rain all over the cafeteria floor!

did anybody stop to think about all those nice old tea ladies who the papas brothers threw out on their ass? the tea ladies were the HEART AND SOUL of lubys and the f***ing papas brothers replaced them with table attendants (not waiters/servers)...this was surely nothing more than a cost saving maneuver, as instead of paying the tea ladies they can force their customers to pay for their replacements...BUNCH OF SCABS! JO MAMA STANDS WITH THE TEA LADIES!

did anybody stop to think that the people who should be ashamed are the papas brothers?

It's sad how tips are becoming expected for people just doing their job.

Luby's has the best fried okra. For that reason I'll tip anyone there.

its pretty ridiculous when you go to subway or some fast food type place and there is a line on the receipt to tip. WTF for??? when did the notion that it costs extra for someone to prepare your food become so prevalent? is this strictly an american phenomenon? do yall see this in other countries?

everybody wants money for nothing and the chicks for free. i just want the tea lady back.:(

dont feel sorry for me brah. im doing fantastic! feel sorry for the tea ladies that the douchebag pappas brothers threw out. a lifetime of loyal tea service and making sure everyone has enough lemon...only to be tossed aside like last weeks jello. and all you care about is those scab pseudo-servers who stole their jobs.

    THEY TOOK THEIR JOBS!

    Well said.

Certain people just have a sense of self-entitlement when it comes to money. I have wealthy friends are who horrible tippers. It's not like it's going to make or break their fortune over a couple dollars every now and then, it's just who they are.

Some people just don't derive a sense of self-satisfaction from tipping, which usually transcends into other things. They're usually the same kind of people who won't stop to help their fellow man (albeit most of the time a stranger) jump their car on the side of the road or parking lot.

Sometimes it's the smallest things we do for people that have the biggest impact. For those who think that's a cliche, you should try it out sometime.

That street goes both ways. This sense of entitlement is growing bigger and bigger into the service industry in that almost all service jobs think they deserve a tip for performing the basic duties of their job. Why can't people just do a good job because it comes with the job? Why should there be an extra tip incentive when you already pay for the service?

You make me think of this:

    <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/rcCXnXDiKoQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

If you were born colorblind, you would probably have a very difficult time even conceptualizing the way that you are deficient relative to other human beings. But that doesn't mean you aren't missing something.

    Yes this site disappoints sometimes.
And some of you call yourself texans or houstonians?
    I never.

Interesting to note the demographics and makeup of this bbs. It has changed around here.. some good.. some bad. Lots of carpetbaggers amongst us. Kudos to clutch this site truly has become international. Bad mouthing lubys how dare you.

Anyway I get OPs point and I myself do not like incongruent tipping. Gals at chilis for example work their ass off for 15-20% on a crap total and the door guy at hotel gets a fiver for opening a door in 10 seconds? I guess...

Why are so good at being annoying?

What is your complex about poor people vs. rich people? My theory is that you have a cute little house, and you have a lakehouse maybe.. but really its more a money inferiority complex that you have. Its really weird since you pretend to defend black folk or racism, yet somehow you think its cool to rag on poor people? I don't get it. What did poor people do to you? You claim to have been to mexico did you feel high and mighty walking around even more of those poors? I mean you must have been wanking off mentally at the site of those people selling gums on the street. Also I am ashamed your boat is not bigger. why is it so little?

I get it you want to be cool on here, and you are a professional clown. In that sense you are on you A game. But why not dial it down? Be more of 'less'?

I guess what I am saying is I wish you were as baller as you try to be on here. That would really be something.

exactly. the notion that im supposed to give a dollar to someone who comes by and fills up my water once is ridiculous. or that when i go to thundercloud subs im supposed to leave a "tip" to the person who makes my sandwich. as i said earlier, the notion that the act of making your sandwich is not part of the price you pay for said sandwich is a recent phenomenon...the sense of entitlement from young people today is really getting out of hand! glad to see you concur!

im pretty well off (thanks for asking!) and im a good tipper at restaurants where they have real waiters. 20% is low for me, actually. as someone who waited tables for a number of years i know exactly how demanding and difficult that job really is...alot of people just dont realize.:(

i think the world would be alot kinder place if if everyone waited tables for a year or so.

as someone who waited tables for a number of years i can certainly attest to these types!

    well said DB! repped!

So then why is there a tip line when the restaurant is counter service and why should people tip them? Why tip the valet when you already pay for the valet? Isn't it the bell boy's job to bring your items to your room, yet you have to tip them. Do you tip your gardener? Plumber? Locksmith? Doctor? Mechanic? Salesperson at Best Buy? Where is the line drawn because more and more services are expecting tips and that line is shifting and its becoming more of a gray area.

I don't understand how you could (I'm presuming, possibly giving too much credit) a thread like this and still be confused.

You are paying them for the job they are doing. Their "employers" are not.

    The line this:

If someone is helping you get something done with good and prompt service why not?

I tip the UPS driver around Christmas with a gift. I tip a mechanic if he's finished earlier than expected, I tip the person who installs the cable if he's fast and clean.

Living in the East Coast everyone tips. You tip when someone give you directions.

exactly! luby's shifted the costs of paying for the tea lady over to the customer by having their pseudo-waiters work for "tips".

as a former waiter i actually take offense to these people even referring to themselves as waiters. they should be called "table attendants".

Lol. I thought that you were joking with this point earlier, but now I'm beginning to think that you are un - self aware enough to really believe you are some kind of Cesar Chavez of cafeteria workers. I don't even know where to begin.

I bring this up pretty regularly, but, a few years ago, I learned that everybody that appears on the TV show COPS has signed a release to appear on the show. Every drunken idiot in a tank top that has been beating his wife says, "Gee, if my drunken, abusive @ss gets on TV, it'll make me look good - I'll be vindicated."

In inability to recognize your own poor behavior is fundamental to that poor behavior. Of course you think you are doing fine. Of course you think you are being a civil rights activist when you stiff some poor lady making $2.14/hr out of a tip.

I understand tipping waiters. I don't understand why there's a tip line for counter service. It's more of a philosophical questioning why our system is like it is. Japan doesn't operate on tips and they give excellent service. Now Europe doesn't do tips either, and they give terrible service, but why can't all restaurants work like they do in Japan?
If someone gives good and prompt service, then that means that they'll have my business again in the future. That should be enough incentive for giving good and prompt service, not a tip.

i lol at you. you think that what they do at luby's is the same as waiters/servers at regular restaurants.

i think your behavior in this thread has been poor and if i was you i would try looking in the mirror before casting stones in glass houses. and i dont think im doing fine...i know im doing fine!

try staying on topic too - you seem to be taking things way to personal and making this about me instead of the thread topic. its a pretty serious issue with ramifications that go way beyond the scope of mediocre cafeteria food...i know we are all passionate about it, but you really need to reel it in.
