^I had a feeling J.R. would eventually come through with that. See that's where I've been all along, and thought if it's that close, if it's even an argument much less a tossup, then let business/marketing angle be the tiebreaker. Just not how the texans operate though. If the scales tip a fraction of an ounce to clowney or anyone else as the best football decision, that's what's happening. And I do respect that.
Over the last few days, I felt we were leaning towards Clowney. I think this changes things a bit in the sense that Manziel looked REALLY good. Before the pro day, he obviously has tons of tape, but you worried about his footwork and ability to work in a pocket. He obviously wasn't working in a pocket, but definitely showed the ability to plant his feet and drive the ball where he needs to. There's absolutely no way this hurts his stock, and he was already considered to be gone in the top 10 by most. I think now, I'm really confused as to what I think about the quarterback situation. There's no way that he lasts into the second round. I think it's still a five way race between Clowney, Mack, Manziel, Bridgewater and Bortles. We'be learned nothing, and I think we are doomed to speculate for at least another month. As I've been all along, I'm really intrigued by Manziel. I know people don't like the Russel Wilson comparison, but I think it's fairly valid. Manziel has much more potential, though. He just has to be able to learn more as far as decision making goes, though. Thing like that. Things that can definitely be taught.
So what do you think the fans will do if they pass on Bridgewater, he goes to Jacksonville and proves to be the better QB? Will it be like it was with Peyton where we have to wait until both Luck + Bridgewater are out of the division before the Texans make the playoffs again? I wonder how that would sit with the fans?
Yeah, but Manziel had to do the most image rehab of the bunch. You didn't see Bridgewater or Bortles partying with Drake, hanging out with Nolan Ryan or sitting in premium seating at NBA games so I'm not surprised at his professionally directed charm offensive.
wow hes so horrible and unprofessional. how can you trust a kid that wants to hang out with famous people? how was johnny manziel, aka Jay Gatsby, affected on the field by his wild schenanigans? im certain teams are more worried about how he will hold up physically, then who he hangs out with on his free time. when they interview him, they will know he just not some punk rich kid who gets wants to party with the millionaires. he is serious about football
I considered your comment to be the typical arrogant and condescending type of remark that I hear from folks here in Texas all the time. And while Ted Nugent AND Greg Abbot would label me as a "subhuman mongrel" I do believe that if memory serves, the tremendous fervor for Vince Young aka "The Chosen One" had less to do with his skin color and more to do with the fact that he led UT to the 2006 BCS National Championship with a spectacular game against USC.
This. Remember all the gleeping after Jamarcus Russell's pro day? How'd THAT turn out for the Raiders?
I just dont know... His game never seemed very pro-friendly. Too many busted plays he pulled out of his ass to get yards in his career. Plus he had college version of Megatron to be his safety valve. This guy is either gonna be good or incredibly bad. A bust QB at 1.1 will set us back for years, thankfully not cap-wise though. He did look good playing against brooms and still dome air. If the Texans draft him I will hope for the best but I would rather him be someone elses problem.
Why are people making such a big deal about these pro days? Doesn't Dwight shoot like 75%+ from the line during practice? Who cares? It's practice...
To me, that's just the nature of the beast nowadays. Team Manziel has put on a superb PR campaign that's designed to dispell any "misgivings" that may exist in the mind of conservative NFL organizations about Manziel's high profile lifestyle. That's just what you do nowadays.
Anyone concerned with his release point? It seems kind of low in my opinion. I feel like watt would bat a lot of his passes down. He looks great throwing it though. He really helped himself today.
Yeah, I noticed this as well. During Gruden's QB Camp tonight, he ran a drill where he had Manziel stand behind tall pylons (to represent D linemen) and he had the downfield receivers either stand in a spot behind them or move sideways between them. Manziel had to find the receiver and get the ball to him. While he was able to complete the drill, his passes did come out kinda low. That's something that the QB coach will have to take into consideration and work on with him. His pro day was really nice but then again, he was throwing against air.
Both have unique gifts for their positions, and I'd be happy with either player. I'd be happy with Bortles, too, just not quite as much.
