I'd never tried a cheesesteak before, so the girl and I tried out Pappa Geno's a couple days ago. We went to the Heights location. Man, was I disappointed. I got the regular philly, just steak and cheese whiz. That was an overwhelming gob of cheese on it imo. My girl got the wicked philly with the peppers. Did not enjoy the oil from those peppers either. I really wanted to like this place but I can't. I figured it'd be impossible not to like meat, cheese and bread. I did like the bread though.
A cheese steak is supposed to be a beautiful greasy, cheesy mess that you regret eating 2 hours later. That's how they roll. If you want it all clean and stuff just get the steak and cheese at Subway.
I have no problems with some grease and tons of cheese. Perhaps it was the cheese whiz though, that was my first time trying it.
A while ago I flew into Philly and went to Geno's Steaks on my way to Jersey for business. It was good, but an overrated sandwich and experience IMO. I enjoyed driving around and through Philly trying to find the place more than I did the sandwich.
Went to Papa Geno's for the first time last weekend. It was really solid. Their fountains were broken, but no big deal. The sandwich was awesome and, man, their peppers are hot! Would go again.
Papa Geno's is the only one. Zilla Food Truck used to have a unique, good one but they're gone. So it's only Papa Geno's. You don't even have to qualify their #1 ranking with "in Houston" - they're that good.
I had an amazing one with green chiles from a food truck at the Santa Fe Wine Festival a couple weekends ago.
Never been to Genos, So definitely Jakes. Their Cheesesteaks are the **** I like Lucky's take on the cheesestek. Very Very cheesy
