This is a bit hypocritical ( I was an Artest fan when he was here btw..) remember how he would like his little iso dribble plays so much? His FG% for the majority of the season was whack and it always seemed like we had to give him his shots even when they weren't falling.
hypocritical or not, he has a good point. BUT, we still NEED to give it to dwight, not every time down the floor (and we don't), but enough to at least establish him as a threat. smart teams won't double him, but they will be aware of him. unlike asik whom they really don't need to be too concerned about. having dwight occupy the attention of another big will only open up the lane for harden and parsons, which is a good thing.
Metta doesn't get why its still effective to run, but I dont really blame them for questioning why they keep insisting on passing him the ball on the block. Despite his low % off of post ups, if teams are defending you to be able to stop your post ups, its going to impact how they play their defensive sets, what they give up, and what kind of shots your perimeter players are getting. As long as it keeps teams playing their defense the way they do to account for Dwight, we should be all for keeping them in those sets by giving Dwight the ball on occasion and on broken plays. Our best player is James Harden, and keeping the defense keyed in on Dwight makes Harden & other guards/wings on the perimeter better... that's why you MUST keep going to him on occasion. Its the threat that matters at the end of the day. Not the shooting percentage off of post ups. Even though, yes, it would be great if he could be an efficient scorer on the low block with the way defenses play him. If they stopped guarding him the way they do, guess what... that shooting percentage off of post ups will sky rocket through the roof.
He has been a lot better offensively this year than he was last year. Howard is limited as a post-up player but when he makes quick decisions he can score with his array of jump hooks and lobs. He will not draw double teams in the playoffs, and teams would rather that he take more shots than Harden, so he has to realize that and move the ball if he doesn't have a high percentage shot available. If he gets more committed to setting picks for his teammates, Houston's offense won't bog down in the playoffs when the game slows down.
He is right. Those post ups make me almost as angry as Lin's spin move to nowhere . If Dwight actually learned to pass out like Yao did and not always shoot it would be great.
MWP is right. Dwight demands the ball as one of 2 superstars of the team but it doesn't mean his post moves are great. His post moves doesn't allow him to dominate everyone so when he gets a bad match up he should wake up and post up less.
Sometimes I wonder if DMo couldn't score more if he was fed the ball as much as Howard. Alas, we barely ever give DMo the ball in the post......
MWP is right. MANY plays we give it to dwight and essentially get a TO from a steal or a badly missed/pressured shot when we have 1-2 open 3-pt shooters on the perimeter. It's not like Dwight is like olajuwon at all.
no offense taken MWP...you are right...Howard is a weak post player in terms of moves and counter's...that is where Dream and Mchale should be helping him...improving fluidity in the post.
Teachers can teach, but sometimes students can't learn. Dwight is 28 years old and has been playing basketball his entire life. If he hasn't learned it by now, he's never going to learn it
The truth is that Howard is getting better in the post every day. Developing the post moves that Olajuwon has taught him takes time. If it were easy, everyone would do it. I don't begrudge Howard his post touches because if our true goal is to hoist championship banners, Howard will need to develop his game. He is showing a willingness to learn and work at it. He is improving. I think you all will be stunned in a year or two when he is consistently dominating the low post. It won't be an overnight deal, but it will happen. You'll look at silly "don't give Howard the ball in the post" threads the same way we look at "Harden might not be a good #1 scoring option" threads now. If Olajuwon had been able to work with him earlier in his career, he might already be a finished creation, but I'm not going to bemoan the past. Lebron, Wade, and Bosh won 58 games but did not win the championship their first year together. The Rockets are on a similar path if they can just keep the band together.
I'm not saying he's wrong in this case but Ron Ron isn't known for his analysis and intelligence. I'm sure if I fart 1000 times it will eventually sound intelligible word.
Dwight Howard is and always will be a poor post up player because he can't shoot. That's the bottom line. In tinman's recent Olajuwon video, Hakeem made 12 jump shots for his 41 points. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=252126 Every good post player I can think of can shoot. Even Shaq was a much better shooter than Dwight.
He is right... I hate seeing Dwight in the post. He always get it stolen, throw a bad pass across court, get called for a foul.. etc. I rather see him be a PnR player.
Since Howard is so inefficient in the post why on God's green earth is these team double teaming him? Another thing if these refs would stop calling these bogus fouls on him dude would be a lil better. One more thing , what is our record again? Lol
You can't be anything and everything. This a fundamental law AKA Axiom of Choice. Howard has been great this year, and pretty damn good in the post. He's shown growth, and for someone of his tenure and age in the NBA (not to mention ability) that is impressive. No one's been a dominant post star player since Hakeem, and there have been very few of them in the history of the league.
wait till the playoffs come and he is defended by any of the strong defensive centers in the west...if we force feed him the ball, it'll be a disaster waiting to happen...im hoping he'll be more open to pick and roll plays come playoff time
