Well if Bruce Pearl can land on his feet, then Sampson should be able to land an even better job than UH...if he wants to go back to college. Keep in mind his "violations" are now permitted under current NCAA rules so there's really no baggage in my opinion.

But after what he went through, he might be sick of dealing with the NCAA. He'll probably land a head coaching gig in the NBA within a year or two...and if he doesn't win, the NCAA will always be there.

A step or two down? Wow. The guy is in line for a head coaching job in the NBA.

Didn't he get banned from college ball? Maybe it's over now?

We will have to agree to disagree... but I can tell you others are saying the same thing.

He wasn't banned.... Sanctions were attached to whatever team hired him through 2013.

He looks related to Larry Flynt. Just his looks and mannerisms are very similar.

You are entitled to your opinion but sleeping giant is laughable. More like squandered possibility.

I wouldn't mind seeing Sampson at UH, but has he learned his lesson? Cheated everywhere he's been. He set IU back several years, it was a train wreck to say the least. That said, he'd be great for UH as long as he stayed clean, no way he stays long if successful, though. UH would be a stepping stone job unfortunately.

I for one would love to see UH relevant again, so it's worth a shot for sure.

The University of Houston has more Final Four appearances (Five) and members of the Naismith Hall of Fame (Four) than any university in Texas. It's about time they started investing in the sport where they have a legitimate shot to win national championships (tournaments > politics).

Sampson looks like a no-nonsense hard-ass of a coach, which is better suited to college ball. NBA coaches do not outrank their stars in value-added to a franchise, or even an average starter, and have to handle NBA players & their egos with that much more deft.

Good for U of H if they can get him, but there are questions:

    1) UofH isn't OU or IU, so it would be a big change from where he was.
    2) Can he do it without violating NCAA rules?

UH has three really good talents and a 6'4 PG that was starting to come into his own at the end of the season. If the team wins, the fans will show. It won't be over night but 3 years down the line with the supposed new facilities that are coming, who knows. The turnout to the SMU game and Louisville games this past season were decent, better than other years and other games. UH needs to find ways to market the program better because all you see are these small posters around campus that really aren't attention getters so to speak. I think the fact that we are also in the AAC now should/could help also in drawing Sampson here.

It would be a seemingly poor move for Sampson, but my Coogs need some rejuvenation in the basketball program.

That's because college basketball is nonexistent in Houston. A good hire at UH could change that.

No kidding. Phi Slamma Jamma was the biggest thing going in Houston back in those days. Since then, there's been little to nothing to be excited about. There was a little interest when Clyde was coaching UH, but that waned quickly when it turned out he was a terrible head coach.

Win games and the interest will be there.

    It depends.

Sampson is very well thought of in NBA circles but he is completely black balled in college circles. He has twice violated NCAA rules and he got the kiss of death from the NCAA when they tied sanctions to any NCAA team that named him head coach for 5 years. The wide spread belief was Sampson would ever coach in college again.

So, for as good a coach as Sampson is, he may well not get a better job that UH. The team has a lot of talent on it's roster, it has upgraded facilities coming and a city full of talent.

If Sampson wants back in the college game, this may be his best shot. Likewise, UH isn't going to get a better coach. Right now, both need redemption.

If an athlete cheats they pretty much lose their college career. Sampson is a multiple time cheater and he can get another job? Seems kind of unfair.
