so he gets instruction from his teacher, his mother, his father, and his grandfather? could be confusing if methods differ...let alone the pressure/anxiety it might engender.

Stay involved but allow him to find his way. Of course, i don;t have any children;).

This is correct. Back when I was in 4th grade I failed the Reading TAKS test (struggled with English), but because that was a "no student left behind" grade I was able to go to the 5th grade. They did monitor me the next year and require that I stay after school though. The thing I don't understand is that I got a 64ish, but I always thought passing was in the 40/50s.

I took the TAAS and TAKS tests.

But wan't TEAMS the precursor to the TEKS tests or whatever that was?

Also I never understood what TEKS really was. My mom was a teacher for a while though and I remember her always saying there were multiple state mandated assessment tools or something like that not just TAAS/TAKS.

Hire a good tutor (advice from a tutor).

    3rd grade teacher here

Long time reader, first time poster.
Staar is in fact much more difficult than taas or taks. The thing you always want to do is develop their critical thinking. However, since the test is so soon it might be a good idea to google 'staar released test 2013' and spend some time each day going through a few problems. Some of them are multi step problems and at that age most kids really need to take the time to draw out what is happening in the word problem.
If he does not pass in 3rd or 4th they will still promote him. If he fails in 5th then he gets to take it one more time, and if still no he tries again in summer school. Last year about 60% of that age passed so they didn't hold back the other 40%.lol. If the school does threaten to hold him back for one subject then go raise some hell.

My wife is a STAAR test tutor for AISD, and she thinks this testing is ridiculous.

There are smart kids struggling because of many factors.

Personally, there are far too many admins and not enough teachers.

If he fails, he has chances to repeat it. If he doesn't pass it then they will look at his grade throughout the year. He won't be promoted to the next grade, he will be placed. At least that is how it works in my girlfriends school district. She teaches 6th grade.

It depends on when it was. TAKS standards were much higher. At one point the 5th grade science passing mark was around 75%. Math and reading were around 70 in the last few years of TAKS. STAAR is a harder test so with its implementation they lowered the passing score to match up with TAKS. It will eventually go way up.

Just my opinion, but LISD sucks big time. I could vent all day but I hope it has gotten better in the last couple of years if your son is still in it.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
Doesn't appear that they hold the students back in 3rd grade. Starts after 5th grade. Looking into finding a good tutor to work with him.
