Noah/Gibson/Melo/Butler/Rose. That would also be the best starting 5 in the nba, assuming Rose can still play

Not to be a downer on Rose, but it really is possible that he is never the same player again. Or even worse, continues to have injury problems and never is a force again.

If your banking on going to Chicago to play with Rose and win a championship, your really rolling the dice, IMO. Chicago with Melo and without Rose I don't think will get it done. Especially if Boozer and/or Taj is gone as well.

Melo's willing to take a backseat to Kobe and Lebron because they're Kobe and Lebron. He can respect Kobe's seniority (along with Iverson's) and sees Lebron as a peer.

But there's no way he'd be willing to take a backseat to a much younger Harden. And I doubt he would be willing to take a backseat to Howard either, despite being only a year apart.

As for Rose, he's been out of the game for almost 2 years now. So Melo knows that he'll at the very least be able to assert his authority on the franchise. And like others have mentioned, Noah doesn't need the ball or the glory.

Don't forget that Melo doesn't just want a ring. He wants to enhance his brand. And I doubt his CAA handlers would let him go to a place where he's the 3rd option.

To be fair, none of us are in Melo's head.

It's just as plausible that the issue of taking a back seat is as much about trusting the skill level of his team mate as it is about age.

Melo might fully well be willing to take a back seat to Harden.

In the end, we'll never know unless it happens, right?

The way I see it is, If the big 3 breaks up and Rose gets healthy, he's headed for Chi

If rose is unhealthy and the big 3 breaks up, he's coming to Houston

If Rose is unhealthy, and the Big 3 stays, he'll stay in NY and let Phil work

I would rather get Melo, then use him as a trade chip to get Durant on the remote chance he wants out. But maybe that's just the little Morey in my head talking...

That's completely true. And I sincerely hope I'm wrong, because Melo on this team with Harden and Howard would be amazing.

During Yao's last season, I went to our home opener against Denver. My wife and I got lower bowl tickets in the section behind the hoop. They were off to the right side and it was the two seats next to the railing. Before the game, I overheard two of the courtside police talking about Carmelo Anthony. One of the officers said to the other that he had been speaking to Carmelo before the game and that Anthony said "You may see me here before the end of the year"

This made sense at the time and I believe it was the summer before when it really became clear that Anthony would leave Denver. IIRC ultimately we were more of a leverage tool.

But this did happen 100%. I posted about it at the time and what I took away from it was that had Yao been able to stay healthy, Carmelo would have come to Houston.

That was years ago and Anthony still has not won anything. I believe Houston is a more sound option than Chicago and I full expect us to get him if he truly wants to win.

LOL at the Melo groupies. If you understand the NBA game who would you rather have for $22M a year? Howard or Melo? If you answered Melo you do not understand the NBA game. By every metric other than his volume shooting and gunning 28 PPG Melo is a complete waste of money. Except of course for a franchise like the Knicks who use him to sell seats.

From Houston's standpoint a fair trade for Melo would be Lin, Jones and the 2014 first round draft choice. Absolutely nothing more. Which I imagine was right around what Morey was offering. Makes sense from an advanced stats standpoint. And that is why Melo will never put on a Rockets uniform except in his dreams.

Why are you creating a false choice between Howard and Melo? Any scenario that has Melo on the Rockets also has Howard, Harden and Parsons.

It invited the reader to consider the relative value of a $22M player in the NBA. It was not your introductory philosophy "false choice" paradigm.

valid point, but if melo comes here, i dont think ppl would view him as a 3rd option.

he'd definitely average more points than dwight, and him and harden would probably switch off who scores the most.

^^^if anything, i see dwight taking more of a bosh role.

not saying they're similar players, but dwight knows his bread and butter is D and rebounding. harden + melo left to scoring, all while DH still gets around 17 a game

Melo takes 19-22 shots a night.

Melo groupies fantasize he can change, it won't happen.

They should know Phil Jackson is Zen Master, not Santa Claus.

Not view him as the third option? Christ his scoring efficiency is below that of the Rockets entire team combined. How bad is that? Of the starters only Bev scores less efficiently than Melo. And Bev's value is on defense. Melo's?

His offense is on par with Harden's.

Differences in style and method, but identical in effectiveness this year.

Not sure if you believe that if you keep saying it, it will become true, but it was wrong the first time you said it, and still wrong now.

No Melo's offense is not on par with Harden's. Harden has been a super efficient scorer throughout his NBA career. Melo is having his best season ever. And the gap between Harden and the volume shooter Melo is still wide. Sorry.
