When I was on vacation there, I was in a situation where I wasn't carrying enough cash to tip the waiter his 20%. The waiter was horrendous, but I was aware that tipping is kind of a necessity for service staff in the US. I mentioned to him that I didn't have enough to tip (I actually showed him my wallet) and he got really pissed.

Was I supposed to handle this some other way?

I worked as a waiter. If he really was horrible, don't worry about it. You shouldn't tip a large amount out of obligation. Having said that, IMO, you shouldn't go out to eat at a restaurant if you don't have enough to tip appropriately. If I am low on funds, I will go to a place where tipping isn't customary.

In your situation, iI wouldn't have said anything. If he did a poor job, he didn't deserve 20%. If he did a really nice job, I would have found money somehow or not said anything at all. If your boss walked in and said he couldn't pay you because of a completely avoidable situation, would it make you feel better?

In a message unrelated to the above, I WOULD LIKE TO REITERATE THAT THE PLACE MENTIONED IN THIS ARTICLE ISN'T A PLACE WHERE YOU WOULD TIP AT ALL IN THE FIRST PLACE!

I hate seeing people that haven't worked in the service industry at all, dump on people that do and say what they do is easy, brainless and anyone could do it. Most people that work in the service industry, whether it be the dishwasher to server to chef bust their ass to make your life a little better and enjoyable.

What are you talking about earn? They don't have to earn anything from you. You chose to come to a restaurant to eat, instead stay your ass at home and cook your damn self.

Am I supposed to tip the Walmart employee for ringing up my items and placing them in a plastic bag? She's providing a service busting her ass making my life easier, right?

    What about the UPS driver?

I just don't understand why we need to tip waiters for doing something already in their job description. I'm sure everyone knows this, but if the waiter doesn't earn minimum wage with tips, the restaurant/employer pays him for the difference. Going back to my earlier post, I don't believe a waiter should be earning more than minimum wage.

this whole tipping sh** is crap. pay someone minimum wage at least..and call it a day.

if you want me to pay the waitress, then let's do a set fee. Just because i ordered 2 more drinks and a dessert mean I should have to pay more..

    This.

You people who bash on waiters do realize they do more than just bring your food to your table right? They provide a service as soon as your happy ass sits down at a table to ensure that your time at that restaurant is enjoyable. Whether it be refilling drinks, dealing with complicated and agitating orders, running food, cleaning the table, clearing the table, etc.

I worked as a waiter for about two years and whenever I'd have friends poke fun or pick on my job I'd tell them one simple truth: Ok, come take my place on a busy Friday night and see how good you can do? Since it's so easy right? Just like I couldn't step in and do your job, you couldn't step in and do mine. There's always a learning curve with every Job. So unless your waiter was completely horrible and didn't care, you should tip generously.

Not tell him, and 15% is the accepted minimum.

Fecal material is always in your burger, but I guess not adding additional feces should be rewarded nonetheless.

Do most people tip at bars? I usually tip 15%, but I do feel that I shouldn't have to tip 15% for a bartender doing their job.

Totally cool with waiters/waitresses earning minimum wage or above.

Let tipping be for exceptional service, and at the insistence of the customer... not just a customary expectation. And yeah, don't tax that s*** either.

I'd rather have the person serving me happy that their rent is not completely subject to the mood of the person they're waiting on. Happy employees = happy customers.

Hold on young man. Have you ever eaten at mid-priced French restaurants (in France)? Careful what you ask for on the no tipping... you've been spoiled by good service all your life.

and "don't tax that s***"? Well I agree with that, although the same could apply to anybody doing any job, lol.

I can count on one hand how many times in life my dining experience has been impacted because of poor service. Meanwhile, like others in this thread, I know people who incessantly b**** about service at every restaurant they go to. Maybe their standards are higher, or maybe I'm just more laid back. Probably both. Those people who complain constantly and tip poorly have usually never worked in a service industry, I find. Either way, I doubt I would be negatively impacted if everyone sudden got paid a semi-livable wage. And even if I was, I go out to eat for the food and to spend time with people first and foremost. Whether my drink is refilled the moment I finish it is of little consequence to my personal enjoyment. There's no stick up my ass, I can deal.

Keep in mind - this isn't a traditional "restaurant". Noodles are counter-service places, but they to bring your food to you and occasionally check up on you. It's sort of in-between a McDonalds and a regular sit-down restaurant. I've always wondered about tipping there.

I suspect it's like a coffee shop - if you make it easy to tip (line on CC slip to sign, etc), lots of people will. If not, people won't. Not because they are bad or cheap or even think they shouldn't, but it just doesn't cross people's mind as something you'd do.

that's because you've been spoiled by American waitstaff. Go to Europe. The high end places will be fine, but below that you'll be dissatisfied very quickly by the aloof waitstaff.

and cut the crap with the "livable wage" bs. That's politics. It's an entry level job with limited barriers to entry -- of course it's not going to pay great.
