His upside this year is Jamal Crawford, which is fitting since his first real contract was that 7 year 55 million deal which is comparable to what Lin got. If he gets 15 over the playoffs and 18 in a series he'll be an important cog in a deep playoff run, and his next contract will be in the 5-7 million range just like Crawford's either with the Rockets or elsewhere.
I never said he was the 7th option, someone else did. IMO he should be the primary catalyst off the bench in his current role. With the starters I would put him behind Harden, Dwight and most nights even Parsons (and last night Jones). Hopefully you see where I'm going with this. If Lin is "on" like he can sometimes be he could be a top option. And read carefully, I never blamed Lin for anything. He's been about what I expected him to be, with flashes of very, VERY good play. I'd rather expect a 13/5, turnover prone guy and be happen when he exceeds that than to expect more and be let down. My issue has never really been with Lin, but the attitudes and agenda of fans surrounding him, good and bad.
No realistic fan believes he deserves 15mil next season, or any season for that matter. But I believe he's performed pretty close to his actual contract of 8mil per. You and others keep focusing on his 15mil balloon payment as him being grossly overpaid, when in reality, Morey's poison pill contract only makes it seem like he's grossly overpaid. It's been pointed out many times that, at around 8mil per year, he's being paid pretty close to other PGs with his level of production.
If he avg 15 in the playoffs, we,re looking at Ty Lawson territory, $10m+. crawford would not get more because he has Chris Paul on his team. So his role is somewhat stunted.
Thanks for clarifying, it makes a difference. I agree that it may be frustrating for objective fans to hear all the praise (derision) heaped on what appears to be an avg starting PG. But then again there has never been anyone like him come into the league and impact it the way it has short of having the insane athletic abilities of a Jordan, Kobe or Lebron.
dragic play ok? lol hes averaging 20+ the last 10 games, thats pretty damn good. If putting up 20 a game is just ok, does that make Lin below average play the last few games? if lin puts up 17-7 off the bench, heres your reaction
That was/is the Rockets plan for Lin, Jet. Unfortunately Lin was in a terrible funk after the injury.
That is why I don't think Lin is worth 8.3 million a year. We are not using him like an 8.3 million a year player. His production per minute might justify that type of contract. But he is not getting the minutes. Getting Harden changed the course of the team. Let's say that Jordan Farmar and his contract were backing up Bev. I don't think there would be any effect on our record.
I wonder if ppl remember lin's good stretches, like the beginning of the yr when he was getting 18ppg shooting 50/40/80...the 34 (9 3s vs philly), the 31 in OT vs the raps, the 3 game stretch when harden was out and he was closing games averaging 20 and 8, the triple double, the 26 against portland....
I think people do remember all too well, and that's a source of frustration. It's hard for me to trust someone who is inconsistent. It's true in love, life, and basketball.
I think this is both correct and imperative to understand. The question should not be "Is Lin worth his contract?" but rather "Is Lin worth his contract considering his role and production." And to that, as an avid Lin fan, I would say he has performed well and up to par so far, but more improvement will be needed from this point on. As many people before me have mentioned, in an alternate universe with Lin as the face of the Rockets (with KMart, Asik, Parsons, PPat) I would expect this sort of discussion would not be happening (rather it would be over why we are losing so much). Jeremy Lin definitely has upside- I would say definitely above average and certainly alot more than he is producing currently. Jeremy's emphasis on production (regardless if its points, turnovers, assists) bodes well for him going forward, as it has for many players in the past. There are many excellent pieces on Jeremy on the internet. I don't agree that Jordan Farmar would have the same impact as Lin overall- maybe in those reduced roles during Lin's darkest hours this season (and the playoffs thus far ).
I love what I've seen out of Lin lately. He still needs to cut down on his turnovers, but to me quite a few is due to playing with Asik and the second group. A pass to Asik is a 50/50 chance for a turn over. He seems to be playing with a lot more confidence as of late which would be huge come playoff time. He just HAS to cut down the silly turn overs. They aren't the old Lin turn overs either, trying to force what would be an amazing pass getting tipped. They are leaving your feet with out anywhere to go, or just bone head cross the court passes against an athletic defense. He just has to play with confidence or he's doomed.
this thread was going good 3-4 pages ago just rockets fans & a few LOF discussing lins-upside ( the name of the thread) me and old man rock were actually having a decent discussion. Then a few rockets fan that HATE on Lin all the time, had to come in and get all that started, don't understand that? Tall complain about his fans talking about him but when people are doing it in (thread) y'all come in stirring stuff up, super weak & LAME
When was this due to him putting 17-7 I would say this after a bad game also, I replied to comment about dragic which dragic. That 17-9 game wasn't all that good anyway he had 5 turnovers we've saw Lin get 17 points easy that's not nothing to get excited over.
I don't see any difference between this thread and the 'Lin is a joke' thread. Same topics being discussed.
i can understand that, my view was it was more postive going on here vs the (lin is a joke thread) then the people who often dont like lins game (which is ok) came storming in going at posters with LOF name calling, saying lin cant do this and that. once again (which is ok) everyone can have their opinion just saying why do it here when you can easyily fight with people in the (lin is a Joke thread) and most of them do it in there, wanted to come in fighting in here also because they couldnt stand people saying postivie things .
I agree. If lin just got paid for 1 mil a year, LOHs n CF veterans wouldn't b**** about his inconsistency furiously. Unfortunately, morey put Lin in this predicament, either accidentally (refering to the availability of bigger stars like harden n howard) or on purpose (to cover up n justify his mistakes for cutting Lin in the 1st place). Jordan farmar is what exactly average nba pg. Lin is slightly above average IMO.
I was actually agreeing with you. Topics being discussed there are being unnecessarily brought here when both threads were made for different purposes.
