I am just wondering what stereotypes people from different Asian countries have about each other. E.g., Japanese about Chinese, Chinese about Koreans, Koreans about Thais, Singaporeans about Koreans, etc. The reason why I am coming up with this weird question is that my co-founder and me are meeting some people from Singapore tomorrow and he asked me what they think about Koreans. I have no idea. Did some googling and found the following things: Most people from other East Asian countries don't seem to like Japanese people too much. Japanese people seem to somewhat look down on Koreans and Chinese? Koreans are regarded as drunk people who have a temper and get into fistfights, but are kind of good at business? I know these are all stereotypes...but I know we have a bunch of people who are originally from various Asian countries. Was just interested what the most common stereotypes are you can report.
From what I hear, Filipinos are the best in bball in Asia, although the ones I know and work with aren't that good in sports. Also there are 10 boy/girl-bands in Korea per square mile.
From a general Hongkonger perspective, Hongkonger - Cowardly/cynical/materialistic/constantly complaining mainland Chinese - Bullying/unscrupulous/uncivilized/violent/brainwashed Koreans - K-pop superstar/plastic surgery/ill-tempered Japanese - Well-mannered/civilized/rich-cultured/constrained Taiwanese - Polite/well-mannered/civilized Singaporeans - arrogant/pretentious/obedient/funny accents Indians - Ordored/exotic/cunning(smart)/funny accents Just the general perception from what I hear. It's by no means to be racist or disrespectful. Don't blame the messenger. Japanese are disliked by Chinese and Koreans because of the brutal colonization in World World II. Otherwise they are pretty well respected in the rest of Asia.
A startup. Also, I read something about most Koreans not having certain glands which cause body odor, compared to Westerners, which is why Koreans regard Westerners as "stinky". Of course, even if true, Koreans more than make up for the lack of body odor by eating tons of kimchi, radish and garlic . When I am at the airport, I can smell the KAL plane once it lands!
When I worked in Seoul, I definitely saw the drunk aspect. Man, those guys are insane in the amount they drink. What's bad is that they can't handle it either. Get blitzed, grope women at karaoke, be at work at 9am the next day. Insane.
Dude, what are you talking about? The Japanese are almost universally reviled in most of east Asia. Their military did a lot of bad stuff in SE Asia, particularly the Philippines. Even the countries that they didn't brutalize don't like them for aligning too closely with western powers and for their superior attitudes.
It's not just Koreans; east Asians on average have fewer apocrine sweat glands. And of course diet affects body odor; it's not something particularly bad for Koreans. For instance, Americans typically consume a lot more dairy products than east asians, which gives off a very distinct body odor. Personally, I'd rather smell garlic and spice than musty cheese and milk, though we're so used to the smell that it hardly registers on us.
