Malaysia's radar and defense capabilities certainly aren't US standards but at the same time it looks like where the plane crossed the Malay Peninsula it might not even have been in Malay airspace but Thai. There is also a lot of traffic there and given that it probably took less than an hour to cross the peninsula and the over the strait there might not have been time to scramble jets and/or they didn't feel it would be worth it as whatever it was at the time didn't appear to be a threat to Malaysia but a plane on it's way out of Malay airspace.

I'm an aviation nerd so Lojack doesn't really concern me as far as that argument goes.

Obviously, we have to wait until we actually find the plane and run a thorough investigation before we can finally conclude what we learned from this saga.

I know it's early but some simple recommendations could be:

    1) If it was a hijacking and the plane was commandeered when the pilot or co-pilot stepped out to use the lavatory - to start designing jetliners with a lavatory inside the cockpit. That way the cockpit truly would never have to be opened mid-flight

    2) Revisit the idea of applying technology that transmits blackbox data in real-time.

    3) Pressuring countries such as Malaysia to upgrade their current radar capabilities. Somebody posted the link earlier in this thread that when it comes to radar you get what you pay for. Very true.

You are suggesting incredibly expensive changes because of something that MAY have happened ONE time.

It's true that it very well could have been Thai airspace that was breached. I've seen the airspace maps and it's close.

Either way, that factor alone is a big deal.

    Thankfully, 9/11 only happened once.

I would be shocked if the plane landed on the ground.

I think what started as a hijacking (internal or external) ended up with pilot error and the plane is somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

They could play United States undercover espionage agents traveling on the plane as a nice, young Chinese couple. When the Taliban sees through their guise and take over the plane, the lives of 200+ people are on the line while Sammy J and Nic Cage battle terrorists at 35,000 ft!

    Sponsored by LoJack.

Gotta have a retired president (Harrison Ford) on the plane who comes in to save the day. Make it a sequel to Air Force One.
