Not sure, but pilots interviewed on CNN said that 45,000 is well beyond Boeing's design parameters. At that altitude the air is very thin and the plane would be a bordering on: A) going to fast and breaking apart or B) losing speed and spiraling downward out of control. But, many are questioning the validity of that altitude data, due to the fact that the plane apparently kept flying after that essentially doomed height. One crazy possibility is if the plane was hijacked it could be flown at that altitude because the lack of oxygen would be an efficient way kill all passengers at once.

No surprise there really. After all that's come out, it makes sense.

I don't really understand why they still favor the idea that it must have crashed into the sea. Considering that the hijacker(s) were apparently really skilled pilots, why would they go through all the effort to steer clear of radar on an elaborated route, just to then let it crash into the sea?

There must be some fairly hidden runways somewhere. Question is what they did with the passengers...if that theory has any legs.

I just don't understand the rationale behind hijacking a plane only to crash into a sea, especially if you are going to fly off course for that long.

This entire thing is insane. If the plane ends up being intact somewhere I sure hope the people are still alive. How wonderful that would be.

What are the odds that there is some secret island with a runway on it out there?

I just don't see why it would crash into the ocean.

The timing of it doesn't add up when they say it may have crashed into the Indian Ocean. If they were flying for 5+ hours, they could've gone well beyond the Indian Ocean. That's what really makes the landing somewhere theory still a wide open one.

Missing Malaysia Jet Had Room to Land Among Andaman Island Chain

    http://skift.com/2014/03/14/missing-malaysia-jet-had-room-to-land-among-andaman-island-chain/

The Malaysia Airlines plane that has been missing for more than six days was “was deliberately flown across the Malay peninsula towards the Andaman Islands,” Reuters reports, citing two unnamed officials. The plane reportedly followed the longitude and latitude checkpoints used by experienced pilots to define air corridors, raising new suspicions that it was hijacked.

MH370 could have gone about 2,200 nautical miles (3,704 km) from its last reported position in the Gulf of Thailand, as the Wall Street Journal reported, which would put the Andamans well within the range. The chain is made up of hundreds of islands, most of them uninhabited, which separate the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. The Andaman and Nicobar island chain (its full name) is mostly administered by India, which lies 1,200 kilometers to the west, except for a few isles on the northern end, which are part of Myanmar.

If MH370 made it to the Andamans, is there anywhere it could have landed?

The short answer is yes—there are several airports long enough to land a Boeing 777. But doing so covertly would probably require the complicity of the Indian armed forces (or perhaps those of Myanmar), which makes it extremely unlikely.

According to Boeing’s specifications for 777 aircraft (pdf, pg. 16), the plane would need between approximately 1,160 to 1,600 meters (3,800 and 5,200 feet) to land at sea level, depending on its weight at the time:

    screen-shot-2014-03-14-at-5-27-49-pm

The main Andaman airport in the town of Port Blair is 3290 meters long—more than enough length for a 777. The airport is administered by the Indian Navy, which has just joined the search for the missing plane, so it’s pretty certain that flight MH370 did not land there undetected. Indian ships have been searching an area that reaches 270 nautical miles north from Port Blair, and 70 nautical miles west from Campbell Bay.

The island chain’s other airports are the Car Nicobar Air Force Station (runway 2,717 meters), the Campbell Bay Airport (a mere 910 meters) and the tiny Shibpur Airstrip.

Slightly north of the Andamans, the airport at Coco Island, which is part of Myanmar, has a runway that is 1,400 meters long.

you just have to feel for those families waiting to confirm whatever happened to their loved ones. :(

    Oh, they're probably dead.
Or, um, no, they could be on this obscure island... maybe?
But, yeah... don't cancel the nice funeral you set up.

    :(

If it did fly for 5+ hours after being hijacked and turned around from Beijing could you imagine how terrifying it would be to be a passenger on that damn plane? And then at the end of it all crash into the ocean at night?

Looks like that's what happened at first.

Sounds like this could actually have happened?!

Seems like the stolen passports don't have anything to do with it, though?

So it was hijacked, flown up to its max altitude to make sure it could get to some destination if it ran out of fuel? Hmm...

Maybe the pilot just went insane and eventually crashed into the ocean after having his fun. Maybe the pilot wanted to die in the most notorious way possible and this is what he thought of.

Here's a wild theory that kind of fits.
