I would love to see that, but only if we also replace Parsons with a lockdown defender and we keep Beverley. We need to be in a situation where neither Melo or Harden are guarding a star offensive player every night because none of them are capable of doing that. We need a situation where Howard defends the best big guy, someone else defends the best SG/SF and Beverley defends the PG.

There's no point having all this star power if they can get abused on one end of the floor.

Marc Berman write this article because NY are going to loose Carmelo for nothing

Houston and Chicago are forntrunners becase Carmelo can has the option to choose where to go ( and it looks like both are in Carmelo's mind)

I don't see mchale as being the coach if we get Melo. When you have harden Howard and Melo, then u need a coach who can put them over the edge and merge the talents. No offense to mchale, but that's not him.

COULD the Rockets send Lin, Asik and Chandler to the Knicks in a sign-and-trade deal for Melo? Yes.

The combined cap figures for Lin, Asik and Parsons (assuming that Chandler's team option is picked up) will be about $17.7 million on July 1. That means that the Rockets (who, in this scenario, would presumably be an under-the-tax team) can both (1) acquire a player via sign-and-trade in the first place and (2) trade that package for incoming salaries of up to $22.7 million. For point of reference, the "super max" for Melo next season would be a starting salary of just under $22.5 million.

WOULD the Rockets give up that package (i.e., Parsons specifically)? I'm not so sure.

I think the Rockets get greedy (in a good way) and hold onto Parsons. They could use both Melo and Parsons as "hybrid 3/4s" and play them interchangeably as their forward tandem.

I may share other thoughts on a Rockets sign-and-trade deal for Melo from a cap perspective (mostly from the Knicks' perspective), which I may or may not turn into a blog post. Not sure if I have the time.

    Bima-

If you address this whole shenanigan in a blog post, or if you wanted to comment here, i'd be interested to hear your take from the angle of the Knicks on this top:

Mainly this question pops up in my mind:

(assuming Melo decides he is leaving one way or another and he's got another team lined up as a backup plan if the Rockets cannot get a S&T done with NYK)

If you were Dolan, would you prefer or see more benefit to getting a few one year contract players back in Lin/Asik + whatever assets (picks & maybe a young player like Jones) & taking a luxury tax hit still, or would you rather just simply let Melo walk and get under the luxury tax to start the rebuild process after he walks?

I think there are way too many assumptions on here that the Knicks would "obviously" want to get something for Melo if he's leaving and thats the reason why the Knicks would do business with the Rockets, but I'm wondering if we should pump the breaks on that notion for awhile because letting Melo walk is definitely an option that, to me, might actually have some benefit to consider as well.

    Thanks.

If Knicks trades for Lin, his cap hit would only be 8 mil next season, and that's much less than if they kept him 1.5 years ago(15 mil cap hit next season). Ironically that's a smart tax money saving move right there;)

Rando is simply not on the same level as Melo, and even talking about fits, Melo is much better. We already have Bev for defense. What do you need Rondo anyway?

If they trade for Melo, they're not giving up Parsons....only players going out would be lin, asik, dmo or tjones but not both and a pick somewhere. they probably throw in greg smith too.

Phil Jackson signing with the Knicks couldn't come at a worst time. He's not going to get ass raped by morey. He's not stupid or incompetent like the rest of the Knicks front office.

Fine or not, if you replace Asik with a random back up C it's a drop on the defensive end. You still make the trade, but it is what it is.

No you don't start him at the 4. He will be play the 3 and when McHale goes small then he will be playing the 4. If we get Melo, we all can say bye bye to Parsons, and Asik.

Fwiw, Kurt Helin from NBC Sports says that sources tied to Melo have told him that Melo really prefers to be in one of the mega markets – LA, CHI, NY. Dwight’s recruited him, but he thinks it’s still a long shot based on his strong desire for one of the bright light cities.

I think the Knicks can consider Lin and Asik as expiring to make the S&T,
So the rockets should add something extra there (T Jones and a first),
But not more than that, because like some fans are posting, with this assets the rockets can create space to sign Carmelo directly.

Honestly, if you are getting rid of Asik and Lin, who in the world is producing off the bench after this trade. It's not like it frees up any money.

The problem with Lin and Asik is even though their cap hits are only 8.3 mil they are still getting paid 15 mil. The Knicks would get raped financially in that deal. Why would they want Asik at all when they are still paying Chandler 14.6 mil and he is expiring? Just makes very little sense.

I would love Melo on this team, but I just don't see how a deal gets done at all.
