Good point. I think we're all overlooking one very real possibility:

Not sure if dumb question but...

How long would it take for plane debris to sink? If the plane crashed into the ocean the day they lost communication, wouldn't everything be underwater by now?

You would have to strip the plane done. I am sure its worth more than 30 mil. A 777 list price is over 200 million.

Sounds worth investigating further since MH370 was, indeed, headed northeast.

It still doesn't explain these alleged "pings" Malaysian authorities are claiming they picked up hours after the plane dropped off radar, though.

We're discussing "sinking" in the "Swimming lessons" thread. Come on over.

The only thing that sinks (or stinks) is the brown turd of derailment you drop into every single thread.

You wouldn't necessarily know that you had made an unusual turn. It was midnight, on a moonless night, flying over water...besides the feel of the plane turning, there isn't much to give you bearings.

My guess is that something happened when they were switching into Vietnamese airspace, possibly a sudden or onset depressurization event with onset hypoxia. Trying to confirm what the 777 rapid decent procedure is, some suggest it may be to turn 90 degrees to avoid traffic below. If that is the case, it's possible the pilots were trying to turn the craft around, but eventually passed out due to lack of oxygen (like the Payne Stewart crash or Helios crash) and the plane continued until fuel starvation.

If it was a hijacking with the intent of landing, they had to have intended to make it all the way to Africa...why would they go to an Indian island that is highly valued by the government? Where else could they go? Maybe the hijacker believed they had enough fuel to get to Somalia where they would hold all the passengers hostage and 1 by 1 seek ransoms? Seems ridiculous to me...

If foul play is suspected.... what about Pilot murder/suicide...?

Such as was the case in SilkAir flight 185...

He never turned off the transponder. Just the CVR and FDR right before plunging it into the ground. The point was to get his insurance money (allegedly) not to make a plane disappear.

Fun fact: only time a 737 has gone supersonic.

I thought it's dive only approached supersonic speed, and didn't actually achieve it..?

Has the background of the pilot of Malaysian Airlines flight 370 been thoroughly investigated yet...? I haven't really been following the story until recently...

No it went supersonic. Hard, inverted dive at full thrust from altitude.
