like another poster said above, McHale didn't put the team in the best position to win, which is totally on him imo.
+1. I'd rep you if I could. The only gripe is that McHale let the lead balloon by so much before putting in the bench. It's more than 6 minutes of punishment and all he has done is 1 timeout. Well, it could be a teacher doing his thing (teaching the 1st unit a valuable lesson) hopefully... But this can't go on especially during playoffs. Rockets butt will be out by first round if this goes on. Now, now, just cool it off. Rockets won against Miami and Pacers after all.
Not McHale's fault until he STILL left the starters in after calling timeout when the starters let the Bulls go on a 10-0 run to start the 2nd half. So...down 8 the first half was the starters' fault, down 500 in the 2nd half was the coach's.
Folks can debate whether McHale gave up too soon (down 21 with 8 mins left). You can't really argue definitively a good vs bad decision there though I would have let it run out to around 6 minutes JUST TO MAKE SURE. 21 points is 7 possessions. There have been PLENTY of comebacks of that magnitude in the NBA, though the odds are admittedly against you. However, the issue is the 3rd quarter when you wait until the Bulls go on a 20-2 run before you call a time out OR make any subs. THAT is a problem and fully on McHale. If McHale calls a time out after going down 6 or 10 and makes some subs, there's not nearly as many complaints about McHale. McHale's feel for the game in terms of subs has been a complaint for close to 2 years now. He waits WAY too long to sub out some players when they're playing poorly, and yanks other players WAY too soon when they're playing well.
Except you can. Over an 82 game season, some nights one of the units is going to come out and play like crap. It happens to EVERY team and that's when you lean on the bench and hope THEY have it together. If you ever watched the Spurs over a season, Pops watches for this. If the Starters come out weak, he'll chew them out. If they still play like crap in the 2nd half, he'll sub them out Lightning Fast and let the Bench play. Pops might have let the starters being the 3rd, but NO chance he doesn't sub them as soon as they push the lead up 6 or 8 points. And you would *NEVER* see Pops let them do a 20-2 run in the 3rd after the crappy way the starters came out in the First half. That's called making *everyone* accountable for their time on the floor. If that means sometimes you push the minutes on one of the units, so be it. It's not like the Bench is averaging 40 mpg anyway.
I cannot for the life of me understand how people can still defend Mchale when his lack of common sense and lack of any coaching skill gets displayed over and over again. When your starters give up a 10-0 run in addition to looking horrible earlier, chances are they won't miraculously play better. He decides to leave them in and it balloons to a 20 point lead. Brilliant.
Better question is why not put lin in from the get-go, he's obviously feeling better and the first unit could really use his playmaking especially alongside harden
Not true. When Lin was a starter, Mcfail never hesitated to bring him out regardless.he played good or bad!
I thought it was weird in the box score too, but didn't see the game. Looks like (1) it's a no brainer he should have played more minutes as the only guy who could do anything at all in that game, and (2) it completely would not have mattered -- you don't win games in which only 1 guy plays well. Was it bad coaching? Maybe, but I don't worry much about that. I see rotations as the least impactful duty of everything a coach does in his job. Some people think that's his only responsibility and that it matters to game outcomes if this or that guy played 24 or 34 minutes. McHale is a good coach because the team comes and plays as a cohesive unit greater than the sum of its parts. If there is a way in which McHale failed, it's because the other 11 guys didn't come to play, not because the one guy who was ready didn't get enough minutes on the floor. He probably should have had more minutes, but so what? It didn't matter.
Watch the game pls before making any judgement. You might be right, you might be wrong but because you didn't watch the game your statement has less credibility, at least in my opinion.
I generally agree. I also like McHale, and think there is way too much overreaction going on. But I do think there is always an outside chance that one guy can turn a game around when the guy is a PG among whose skills is the ability to get his teammates going. They should have subbed Lin in sooner in the 3rd q before the Bulls were able to go on that 20-2 run.
Lin has been playing really well - he will get more minutes based on that in the future. But when you lose by 30, who cares how many minutes anyone gets?
TTCR. Torocan has spoken. This loss a good deal on McHale. That being said, he's been doing well enough lately and the team has been hot. Sure we've lost 2 but we're in a good position, so no need for everyone to get their panties in a wad. I'm also personally shooting for 4th seed and hoping POR takes 5th seed. Would love a POR -> SAS -> OKC -> MIA path to championship
