I actually have 2 160GB 10K Raptor drives in RAID 0 for my games and a single Samsung 830 for my boot/programs drive. I can safely say that the SSD is much faster and more responsive than my raided Raptor drives.

Yes I understand there are other measures. When I said "currently is PS4 is 1st place, Wii U is 2nd place, xbone is last place, last gen xbox 360 started 1st place and ended up last place" I was referring to global hardware totals.

This doesn't really mean much, but I do think Sony is better positioned to support their platforms over the long haul. We'll be more worried about PS4 and XBO (or whatever), but I expect the PS3 to continue to sell well (globally), while I think the 360 might slow down quite a bit. They are about the same now, but I think if Sony handles the markets well, the PS3 could end up selling quite a bit more (though I guess it depends on your definition of "quite a bit"). Generally, there are a lot of sales at the $199 and especially $99 price points (not sure if PS3 will ever get to $99 though).

    Mr.Scarface,

Could you give me a breakdown of the sales of the PS3 worldwide? I'm curious as to why this effect seemed to be EXTREMELY effective in some regions (almost 10-1 in Japan), but less so in others (like the US). Do I have the wrong sales figures?

Also, since the amount of PS3 software sold isn't too far off from the amount of 360 software sold, but SO many people bought PS3s ONLY for playing Blu-rays, does this mean that the people who DO game on their PS3s are buying like 50 games each?

Hmm...and to think, the PS3 was mocked for having no games.

For some reason, I'm not sure I've posted about this bit before. It kind of circles back to the "which company is better for developers" point I was trying to make earlier:
    http://www.develop-online.net/news/...rity-for-indies-on-case-by-case-basis/0190188
MS is being a bit more open/flexible, but this is still a terrible policy. Like many other policies MS once had, hopefully they'll come around on this.

I'm more interested in U.S. sales, than I am global.

Of course, last generation was ultimately successful for all 3 consoles.

I think you're expecting too much from ex-Infinity Ward devs. They never tried to push visuals like DICE. Hell, their flagship games MW1/MW2, had a resolution of 600p on consoles.

CoD2, MW1, and MW2 actually had pretty good visuals at the time. Taking some quotes from their reviews:

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2005/11/16/call-of-duty-2-3?page=3 (9/10 for graphics)
    http://www.ign.com/articles/2007/11/28/call-of-duty-4-collectors-edition-review?page=4 (10/10 for graphics)
    http://www.ign.com/articles/2009/11/10/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-2-review?page=3 (10/10 again)
That's just from IGN, but I can pull in other reviews too (Jeff Gerstmann listed "Terrific audiovisual presentation" as a pro for MW1).

I wouldn't disagree with the claim that they're a bit behind DICE, but they generally haven't been bad on the technical side of things in the past either. They've been pretty good at delivering great visuals at 60 FPS too (Dice sometimes settled for 30 FPS).

Of course, I'm not sure how many of the tech leads and artists from IW actually made it over to Respawn. The visuals wouldn't bother me so much if the game was rock solid with its framerate. Respawn has previously said "framerate is king" IIRC, so I already expected something a bit uglier than you might expect. But if it was a consistent 60 FPS at all times, that isn't a bad trade-off. Instead, it looks ugly AND seems to have framerate problems.

Part of the problem might be their engine choice. Given how things ended up (no PS3/PS4 version, delayed 360 version with an emphasis now on the XBO version), I think going with the Source engine might have been a mistake. I'm not very familiar with this, but I think it might rely too much on the CPU for some things. An acceptable cost if you can easily port your game to 4-5 platforms without many issues, but more of a problem if you dedicate your efforts to one platform.

Yeah, true enough that I do expect the PS3 to keep outselling the 360 from now on. I almost went back and edited my post to say just that.

But yeah, the hardware total difference is so small right now that it's barely even worth talking about.

Anecdotal evidence is all I have from various places over the years. PS3 sold a good number of units because of Blu-ray alone. I've had dealing with Retail Chains over the years (work-related) and just conversation with people in the retail channel.

It makes sense. Sony doesn't care how the PS3 ended up in the home, as long as it did. There is a good chance people may buy games for kids and grandkids since it was there.

The COD series was considered very good visuals until EA/DICE brought the Battlefield series to the consoles. BF: Bad Company series blew away the COD in visuals. All COD had was the higher framerate. BF3 and BF4 are so above the later COD series' in visuals, it's shameful. BF 4 on the PC (especially), XB1 and PS4 are just beautiful looking games.

I'm just going to link to this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anecdotal_evidence
I know you really don't care about factual information, but if you ever change you mind, I'd recommend avoiding posts like this in future discussions similar to this.

    Couple of points:

    1. The fact that DICE made games with better visuals does not mean that COD games are suddenly ugly/technically unimpressive. It just means DICE's games are even more technically impressive.

    2. IIRC, each of those games from DICE were 30 FPS. COD has been 60 FPS.

    3. It seemed the "real" IW staff right after MW2. Unsurprisingly, the graphics in the series seemed to stagnate after the release of this game.

This is all a tangent of course. Again, it is quite embarrassing from a technical standpoint (IMO) for Titanfall to look and perform the way it does.

One of CoD's main selling points was/is 60fps . It being a twitch shooter and all. They compensated visuals for frames ,cant have both especially if your focus is consoles (PS3/XBOX360). The hardware is limited and they been using the same engine since forever . Anyways im hoping the next CoD installment is next gen based, because Ghost just sucks balls.

They're now bringing in a 3rd studio to alternate the CoD games, so they might have more time to work on that stuff now. I forgot if it is Sledgehammer's turn next, but perhaps the studio in charge has had a lot of time to focus on next-gen enhancements. I'd be concerned that they might still use much of the same tech (and not rebuild much of it for next-gen), simply because that would be too risky. They know they can just up the visuals a bit, pump out roughly the same game, and still sell millions. The game should probably just die (since it will probably due so eventually due to this mindset at Activision). Activision can transition to pushing Destiny or whatever if/when that happens.

    Anyway, random bits of news...

PS4 sales in Japan suck (sold ~35K last week). You might be able to argue that they're still having stock problems, but I really don't think that's true. Vita might soon overtake it in weekly sales. Ugh...what happen to you Japan? You used to be cool. (I'm talking about horrible console sales...and actually horrible sales all around)

More "Sony will unveil VR at GDC" news:

    Blah blah blah.

A Naughty Dog programmer had a good talk about how their studio works:
    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/f8XdvIO8JxE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>)
    Some notes about the talk:
    http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/03...l-and-how-they-can-make-them-run-really-fast/
This was pretty much known but now confirmed: 3GB of GDDR5 and 2 of the 8 CPU cores are reserved by the OS. Other cool stuff is in the video/link as well. Some technical stuff though. As a software engineer myself, it was interesting to see how Naughty Dog operates (a lot of their concepts/philosophies apply, regardless of what your application actually does of course).

Yeah mate saw that the other day. Thanks for posting it here though. Really good news. That won't stop me from playing against you guys over there will it?

I'm actually getting high speed internet put on finally so I can get the most out of my Xbox One. They said at first they wouldn't have Aus based servers but I'm glad they changed their minds.

I've not got it yet, gonna buy it as soon as the internet gets hooked up in about a weeks time. Can't wait!

I don't think that should be a problem, though I might be the last person to ask about that (I'm embarrassingly ignorant about these things in general).

Good episode about The Final Bosman. Talks about the XBO leaks from NeoGAF a month or two ago. I think I forgot to bring it up here, but since it looked like the leaked TF XBO design was true (even if it didn't make it to retail), that gives some credence to the other things that were rumored at the time.

For about an hour today, the XB1 Titanfall bundle could be had for $399 by entering Promo code "1".
