I enjoyed it. Started out a bit slow but got better. Didn't expect it to go into Copernicus and Bruno Giordano like it did but it was something new to me, so that was good. Liked his story about how he met Carl Sagan.
Not bad but it needs a bit more focus -- i'm sure that will be coming in future shows -- this episode was more an introduction to Cosmos. I have to say though -- sorry, but Neil Tyson is no Carl Sagan.
I haven't watched it yet, but yeah NDT is no Carl Sagan. Sagan was like the Mr. Rodgers of space and astronomy. When he spoke, he was so damned sincere you couldn't help but me mesmerized... and that voice, was perfect for narrating. I love NDT, and hope the new Cosmos will renew passion for space travel in the average american, especially kids. However, I have no doubt the reach with Sagan would be astronomically higher. No pun intended.
Agree, but kind of like Svpernaut just said, the youth won't have a clue about Sagan (give or take a couple of goofy youtube Songified atrocities), so NDT can just be NDT. Tyson is just a tiny bit brittle in his interviews, and compared to Sagan at least, a tiny bit impressed with himself. Missed Cosmos tonight but I'm looking forward to catching up on it.
If anyone likes NDT's Cosmos, I'd invite you to check out Wonders of the Universe with Brian Cox (who might be more TV-hosty than NDT, though I love em both): <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/tTP9WQJBIXA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I thought it was pretty weak. I was hoping for something like Planet Earth... This cosmos seemed more like something a substitute elementary teacher would put on for the class. I'll give it another shot tho. Please no more cartoon drawings or a 10 minute clip of the space ship flying in our solar system.... We all know what planets are near.
I agree that those initial clips were long. I do think they needed to lay out a baseline though. The show is debuting on Fox and they have to play to the masses. But yeah, the spaceship isn't as cool as they think it is.
Haven't watched it yet, but it's pretty hard for me to criticize anything educational on network tv these days.
I didn't care at all for the irritating flying thingy early in the program. A little would have gone a long way. They used it far too much. I don't know if they quit using it later, because I changed the channel, and I love this kind of science stuff! Maybe B-Bob will explain it all to me.
Happily would do what I can, but I'm no astronomer. The recommendation above of Brian Cox and his BBC series is a good one, BTW.
I like NDT, but of course he's no Sagan. I hope the vagueness of this episode is just due to the fact that it's basically the "intro" to the series. I expect much more in-depth analysis and descriptions of the universe and our part/place in it as the show progresses. Time will tell...
Thank you, B-Bob. I'll check that out. Perhaps this version of Cosmos will get better. I've always been a fan of deGrasse Tyson and his ability to popularize science, much as Sagan did, but without Sagan's "voice." That makes my disappointment sting a bit. Like you, I imagine, I recall really enjoying the original.
