If the Texans sign Cassel... That may mean Teddy Bridgewater is not on the Texans radar at all. Why bring in Cassel if Teddy is already NFL ready...???
It doesn't seem like they want to throw a rookie to the wolves while they are still learning what is a very complex system and you don't draft a QB with the first overall pick in the draft and NOT throw them to the wolves immediately.
The team that picks a QB at 1.1 has a borderline starting vet almost 100% of the time. If we bring in Cassel/Vick/McCown, it's still just as likely that we draft a QB with the first pick. On the other hand, if we trade for Mallet/Cousins/etc, then I'd assume Clowney is the pick. Not sure about that. O'Brien was the WR coach when Cassel was in New England. I don't know how similar his system was to his predecessor's (McDaniels?). He did see him work every day as a starter though, so at least there's that.
I'd imagine it was fairly similar at least when it comes to general philosophy and terminology, but obviously O'Brien's system wouldn't be identical. Cassel being a vet with experience and some success in the Pats system would have a much easier time adjusting to what O'Brien wants to do than kids coming out of college who would need to learn everything from scratch while trying to learn how to be an NFL QB at the same time.
It makes sense if he were to draft Blake or Johnny... It doesn't make sense if he were to draft Teddy. Especially considering the fact how everyone proclaims Teddy is ready to start day one...
We have 3 contingency plans on the roster already and Cassel is just a lateral move in terms of skill set and not an upgrade to what we already have. But I do agree that a rookie is still a rookie but with the cap situation and so many holes on the team, if Teddy was going to be drafted _ bringing in Cassel would just be a waste of money. Different story if they were intending on drafting someone like Blake or taking a quarterback in a later round.

Matt Waldman tweet Comp is Joe Montana. Not "finished talent" JM, but on spectrum RT @NFLScout1011: @MattWaldman Who would you compare Bridgewater as a qb?
Just imagine if he had a Sammy Watkins or mike Evans to throw to in college. Teddy had a great year with a bunch of average weapons.
