Signing Cassel would absolutely mean that they weren't drafting a QB with the number 1 pick.

Why? They might view him as a placeholder as a good backup that know's the system.

I doubt they bring him in just as a backup, I think he'll be brought in to start at least at first while a QB is being groomed just like Scurfield was saying

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Calling it now: <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Texans&amp;src=hash">#Texans</a> will sign Matt Cassel, start him for at least this year, draft Clowney and a QB in 2nd/3rd</p>&mdash; Nick Scurfield (@NickScurfield) <a href="https://twitter.com/NickScurfield/statuses/441993595726229504">March 7, 2014</a></blockquote>

Henne got 2 years, $8 mil with $4.5 guaranteed. I expect that Cassell will be looking for something similar and more guaranteed.

I think he could get something similar, they'll probably give him the money they save by cutting Schaub and call it a day.

....Get someone who has experience, and some success, in a system similar to the one BOB is going to use so they won't have to ruin a rookie QB by throwing them to the wolves while they are still trying to learn a very complex system.

You can still take a QB in the 1st and let him be groomed. For some of these QBs, that might be a preferable path, especially for Bortles (and maybe Manziel), even if the social pressure is there for them to play right away. I'm not convinced that anyone other than Bridgewater is truly capable of coming in and starting right away.

Eli Manning was the #1 pick in 2004. But the Giants had also brought in Kurt Warner who was a couple of years removed from his last good season and had lost his starting job to Marc Bulger the year before. But Warner was named the starter and Manning held a clipboard for half the season until he was ready to take over the job 10 games into the season.

This could possibly be a similar situation.

Signing Cassel doesn't prevent you from doing anything. He's not going to cost a lot (in comparison to other vet options). He's really a backup but can be a decent starter on a bad team. But he's not good enough to stand in the way of a rookie when he's ready to start. So you can take him and start him for a year, start him half the year before a rookie takes over (a la Warner/Eli), or have him be the backup from the beginning. The investment in him isn't going to be big enough to prevent you from doing either of those so there's nothing keeping you from drafting a QB with the #1 pick.

He'd be brought it to compete with the rookie. Neither would be guaranteed to start week 1.

Any QB picked #1 in the draft is guaranteed to start week 1.

Tell that to Michael Vick, Carson Palmer, Eli Manning, and Alex Smith.

I think you plug him in for a year, then draft Winston, Barkley or Marriotta next year.

All examples of QB's that shouldn't have been drafted with the first pick in the draft, so I guess you have a point, they do have a lot in common with this class. Maybe the Texans will decide that they just really need Alex Smith or Micheal Vick.

Regardless of either of our opinions on this year's QB class, teams that do think their rookie QB is worth the first overall selection still stock their roster with 'capable' starters. Signing Cassel is by no means a sign of things to come.

I think we are down to Vick, trade for Mallett, keep Schaub, use Keenum as the stop-gap, or throw a rookie to the wolves.
