So if the Texans are not enamored with any of the QBs just trade down with the Browns. Cleveland gets their choice at QB leaving one or maybe more of Mack, Robinson, or Clowney available at #4. Then you'd have extra picks to grab a QB later not to mention you'd have less money invested in a #4 pick vs that #1.
I am simply saying that Mack's pass rushing style and projection translates to a greater chance of success in the NFL. Considering the style of defense the Texans are running I guarantee you that they will not draft Clowney. He simply does not fit.
Greg Robinson is being considered an elite tackle (which doesn't grow on trees) and would instantly improve the offensive line. And if the other young tackles on the roster works out it would put the Texans in position to trade Brown. Could be just a smoke screen but may as well throw Robinson's name in the hat because it can be argued for his size and being projected as an elite left tackle he's the most talented player in this draft.
So if Greg Robinson is the guy...do you move Duane Brown who is already one of the elite left tackles in the game to right tackle?
i think you try and trade him for a 2nd rounder. if not, i think you start Robinson out at right tackle for his first year ...like what KC did with Fisher.
Do you think Duane Brown is on the downhill? I guess I don't. He had the toe problem this year. That's a little appendage that causes big problem for tackles. You trade him away for a second and plug Robinson in, looks to me like you're just trading 1.1 for a second rounder. I like the idea of having Robinson on the right however. If we could trade down and get him while picking up another pick...that would be interesting.
Ideally, incoming high-end T's play RT for a year then move to LT. It would be a misallocation of resources in my book, to bring in a RT with such a high pick. It would have to mean Brown would be on his way out in a year or two. Seems like a waste to me because Brown can play. But freeing up that cap space might help you resign Watt and do some other things long term. It just seems idiotic to me to bring in another T and give up on Brown. It would be just as idiotic to keep Brown and couple him with a T we draft top 5 overall. Nobody invests that kind of a pick in a RT. There are more important positions that need to be addressed. And that RT will get paid like a LT by another team eventually.
Greg Robinson is the only player who has the talent, and work ethic in this draft that projects to be a Watt type of player. I would be fine with this....I was actually thinking we should take him Because he is the only player in this draft that looks like he can be a HOF type of player. You dont pass them up. I just thought there was zero chance the texans would do that. I would prefer this to clowney. Shoot with brown and robinson on the line with meyers...freakin keenum could look like a top QB. You guys underestimate the value of an elite O line.
No one underestimates the value of an elite OLINE. The issue is with value in a salary cap league. It's the Clowney/Watt problem but worse. You aren't going to have a RT that you pay like one of the best players in the league AND a LT that you pay that way. Furthermore, on the list of important positions, RT is most certainly below QB, OLB, DE, CB, S.
Doesn't Brown have like 4 years left on his deal? And with GR on a rookie deal and coming off his rookie deal at the same time as Brown's deal ending.....why wouldn't that work? Brown could step down in salary...he'll be 32...and GR can then get his big deal...if indeed he becomes a primo player. Am I missing something here?
Here's the thing though, say you draft a RT #1, you have that guy on a cheap rookie deal for 5 years, once the deal is up (and likely before) you can move him to LT to replace an aging, and likely at that point overpaid, Duane Brown. Football games are won in the trenches, the best this team has ever been was the year Schaub went down and TJ replaced him, the same year we had a dominant OLINE.
Brown would be cut. Whereas Clowney/Watt might make sense, paying a RT and LT big money would not. You'd be drafting a guy to take the reigns from Brown, which happens, but in our case we'd be looking to replace one of our best players (assuming he's back up to par next year). That's just weird... looking to replace an elite player who isn't that old considering their position. There's a reason the RT's in the NFL aren't that amazing... they all move to LT. The RT position should be renamed to something else. Like less-important-JV-quasi-tackle.
Well I dont think he would be a RT. He would start as RT first year then move over to to LT second year. the average salary for our first pick would be around 5 million or less. The average salary of a RT in NFL is around 5 million. There is no miss-allocation of assets here. The only argument you have is ...is it more important to have a QB or a T with our first pick. In my opinion you take the best player...specially one with HOF capabilities. Bottom line is. If in the second year you move Greg robinson over to LT he is a steal at his salary of 5 million for the next 3 years at that position. Browne will make over 8. You then move Brown in trade or see if he can move over to LT. If he moves to LT then you only paying 2 million more for that position then league average. Either way if you decide to trade brown... you can easily move him for a great asset. A good LT is valuable commodity. I say take the best player and workout the details later. We know what Watt does on the D if he Greg can do that on the O. Thats something special. Worst case scenario is reaching on a quaterback in the first and him being like the Jets sanchez and then drafting a player of moderate value in the second round. We wasted our opportunity of the no 1 pick.
that is ridiculous lol... browne will not be cut. At worst we move him to RT. He can definitely be traded. His salary isnt bad for being a starting caliber LT. We could not only trade but get a solid asset in return.
