What's your point here? That because a certain group of people occupied a certain part of the world for a certain time period in the past that they are somehow the rightful owners of this land?

If that's the case what about the people that the Tatars displaced? What about the land that used to be predominantly Native American & Mexican? What about the land that used to be predominantly Aborigines?

If you dwell on who used to control what land in the past than the entire world becomes real complicated very fast.

Yeah, you don't conduct foreign policy with tweets, cartoons, slogans, and cool catch phrases. That's why Obama should ignore the Republicans and continue a moderate, careful approach.

They have been doing that anyway. Military industrial complex doncha know?

I predict that Russia will take back the Crimean Peninsula which was Russian for a couple of hundred years after they drove out the Turks. 70% are Russian speakers, the Russian Baltic Fleet is there and it was not part of Ukraine till the 1950's when Russia gave it to their s wholly controlled Socialist Republic of Ukraine. Eventually there will be some sort of agreement between Russia and Ukraine which they have done numerous times before. Perhaps some other Russian speakers will also be incorporated in Russia. The Crimea has been rebuffed over and over by the Ukraines and the Russians in attempts at self rule.

The sort of neo-con US political establishment will continue to encircle Russia with weapons and missiles and sort of yearn for that aspect of the Cold War which could justify any level of military spending. Russia oil and gas will play a big role in the great power game.

The only long term solution as with Iran is for the US and its Western allies to treating Russia less humiliatingly if it wants Russia to reject Putin types and be more moderate.

Come on, glynch. Do you seriously believe that what is ultimately behind the moves by Putin in the Ukraine is because we've been busy humiliating Russia? That the military industrial complex really yearns for a return to the Cold War? I think that ship has sailed, and I suspect that they think it's sailed as well. Putin's actions and any reaction from other countries who believe he's wrong in this instance will be based on what they perceive as their national interest, not the hopes and dreams of the world's great arms manufacturers. I do understand where you're coming from, but I think, at least here, that you've gone over the top. My opinion, of course.

The ISS seems trivial in the grand scheme of things until you consider about 150 Billion dollars have been put into this project that is supposed to continue operating until around 2030. Hopefully NASA didn't install locks on the inside inside of the doors because the Russians can't keep that thing in orbit without the US.

Currently Russian channels are showing reports that Maidan activists were trained in Lithuania. They showed interview from year 2012 supposed to happen in Lithuania, showed building with a lithuanian street name. However, the street with that name is non-existant. The absurd level of Putin is unbelievable

not israel & palestine. Numerous places in the world has the same problem. almost entire map of the world. Now it contains regions with mixed etnic people. ones were dominant in one century and etc.

more and more it seems that there will never be peace....

Apparently, Putin has the Russian media, long intimidated to do pretty much what he tells them to do, tossing every damn absurd conspiracy theory the guy and his advisors can come up with on the wall of Russian public opinion. After all, if this continues to open conflict, a lot of young Russian conscripts are going to be killed and maimed. Their parents will want an enemy to hate, and Putin is making sure that the hate is spread around to whatever country of the old Soviet Union that he eyes with avarice. In my humble opinion.

Well if you are from there it's for good reason. The EU is too weak to stop Putin and the US lacks the courage or leadership to do so. If Putin decides to roll in, no one will stop him.

I disagree. With the Baltic States, it isn't just the EU we're talking about (which I agree is weak), but rather NATO, and the Baltic States are full members of that still powerful military alliance. An attack on Lithuania would result in war with NATO. Russia doesn't want that, as much as he'd like to grab one or more of the Baltic States, in my opinion.

Thank you for this insightful post. Nice to see some hard hitting analysis as opposed to the petty bickering and biased emotional wallowing that has filled up this thread.

However, the US definitely has the resources to stake a claim in this fight and not have it linked to Iraq/Afghanistan. It's our go to stimulus plan and capable of stirring up much more national support than bullying the unrelateable Muslims.

I cringed when I heard the naivete and the attempted bullying from Obama on this point in that debate. Now instead of half of America knowing he was wrong then, 100% should now realize it. What a mistake America made in 2012 by voting for celebrity instead of the qualified.

If all you can do is resort to insults, then I suggest you simply not post.

Sorry my post made the president look bad, given today's current events. He brought it upon himself.
