Yep, I think people mostly just don't value these older players talent wise. Do their games translate or not. There are a few role players picked, but Bowen for example was picked over Paul George and Manu too, i.e. modern players. So it's kind of a different topic. In general, fit and talent both matter and I wouldn't go extremely in either direction. That's how most of us seem to see it, I think. A few picks were a bit extreme, but people are mostly looking to balance fit and talent. Anyway, I don't agree that we should just give old players benefit of the doubt and assume they'd translate. Lets say Cousy, easily the greatest 50-60s point guard, amazing vision, but no jump shot at all, even his set shot was shaky and with an extremely slow release, no defense, little athleticism. He's a pioneer and a great but how does he translate. By the way, he used to play center occasionally at 6'1. Different times. Mikan, Sharman, I don't think their games translate well either. I like Sam Jones though, good athlete, great shot, ok-ish defense, unselfish. He'd probably help someone. I remember him drafted in the past in smaller drafts, so I was a bit surprised he didn't make it in a 16 ppl draft.
I like this. Let's start matchups. I say we implement an injury rule this round. Any player who was significantly hurt by injuries in their career should not be eligible. I'd like to give actual explanations this time around, but with so many matchups I don't think that'll be possible for the first round
The main problem Horry could have is if Marc Gasol gets into foul trouble. Rodman can't really play Kareem and neither can Webber. I don't like thething's perimeter spacing. No real shooters. McAdoo is a good spacer at the 4. I like the passing from Horry's team. Just giving him the edge. Vote Horry33 Gilmore is a weird player. Statistically the most efficient player ever. Very hard to judge. Sabonis in his NBA prime wasn't as good as his Euro prime. But was still useful. The Chris Paul/Karl Malone pick and roll will be the most devastating thing here. However, defensively I think jmc will struggle. Oscar/Havlicek/Marion has so much size while still having good speed. I do like JMC's bench a little better and will give him the vote - Vote JMC Dunno how much I like LMA starting but here he should be fun. Deke/Chandler/Willis Reed does give Aus a ton of bodies to put on Hakeem. The size and raw athleticism of Voice's team could give Yung-T's team a lot of problems. Especially when they go small with Melo at the 4. I think Rick Barry goes off though and is the difference in the matchup. The halfcourt really benefits Yung-T's team. Vote Yung-T I think Shaq and Wilt is a wash. Not sure if this is the best team for Steve Nash's talents. Don't see them pushing the ball too much. But that's a lot of shooting in the halfcourt. I can see Wilt doing decently and frustrating Shaq. I'm gonna vote YSL in a close one. I think Kidd gets more in the halfcourt than Nash does. DFB's frontcourt has the advantage here. Frazier and Kirilenko could help on Jordan. Can't do too much. Defensively though oelman's team is quite unstoppable. Insanely, good. Bench defense might struggle a little bit if anything happens to Dwight though. Oelman does lack a little size to deal with Duncan. Dave is undersized. Gonna go oelman in a Jordan let upset. Allen Iverson is like the GOAT version of Monta Ellis. Pairing him here is good. He'll take some stupid shots but he has great compliments next to him. Parker can take over too. Bill Russell is the GOAT defender and Cooper is amazing too. Dirk and Ray Allen are both solid enough so it shouldn't be too much of a problem. I do see Steph Curry being an absolutely gigantic liability here though. Vote jvu Another really tough one. BigMaloe's team is so versatile and is going to absolute dominat rebounding. Good bench too. Hill didn't really develop defensively until later in his career though. I don't even know who the best player in this series is. Maybe prime Garnett or Bill Walton. I love what Maloe's bench can do. I'm going RedNation over a slightly better frontcourt.
What are the ideas? Everyone starts off with $200? We can have a randomized list as usual, and everyone nominates 1 player every turn? Or do we just have the commish put out groups of players every hour or so, depending on activity level
Everyone has $200 and we have 10 batches. Each batch has 20ish players and is open for 1-2 days. Everyone can bid as much as they want for any of those players.
Lol no one has mentioned the fact that Dennis Johnson had to play on magic, nobody at all actually mentioned magics impact. O well
You probably think my team would be better off with Kyle Korver instead of Elgin Baylor. This is what I was talking about--you're just not familiar with these older players. Here's a quote from Jerry West: "He was one of the most spectacular shooters the game has ever known", Baylor's longtime teammate Jerry West told HOOP in 1992. "On the court, the athletic Dantley was as smooth an outside shooter as could be, a force on the inside with an explosive first step, and a master of psychology."
