Rudy's is decent, but it's really not that different than your average BBQ. Ive only had their fatty brisket, lean brisket, and sausage, so not sure how everything else is there...what Ive had has been good, but not nearly on the level of the better BBQ joints.

Maybe he doesn't want to drive to Austin to have lunch.

It's better than average and consistent, not the best though.

Not sure why a local sn followed by local places would equal faking it, lol.

Lemme rephrase my first thoughts... Houston BBQ is overrated.

Someone rate these places for perspective.

    Gatlins
    Skeeters
    Killen's
    Goode Co
    Drexlers RIP
    trailer pit hauled by pickup

What's the name of that red shack in 2nd Ward? Less than blocks from Minute Maid.

houston BBQ isn't overrated, it's rated perfectly... consistently mediocre. there are a few places that do pretty good que like gatlin's but as a whole BBQ is not houston's strong suit - culinarily speaking. that said with killen's in pearland, his other place in montrose and mueller eyeing a spot in town that will hopefully change.

I swear some of the best Brisket I've had in Houston is in the ghetto off of I-10 east. The lot is always filled with expensive cars as many CEO's from the chemical industry take customers there. It's called Brother-In-Law’s Bar-B-Que. Great Brisket and ribs, and big portions for a small price.

I've been to Gatlins, pretty good but I swear the ribs at Pizzatola's are better, at least to my taste buds. Love the open pit and they'll even give you a tour and show you how everything is cooked on it since they are the only ones allowed in the city of Houston to still run an open pit. The chicken is great, but the brisket is hit or miss.

If you are traveling through the Carolina's for some reason, try the different varieties. I'll be damned the vinegar based sauce pulled pork was spectacular. I've had it around there with regular BBQ or mustard sauce too it's for real.

Rudy's has a vinegar/mustard like pulled pork if you want it in Houston. Haven't seen it too much in Texas until recently.

It's just kinda hard to find the place and I got lost in an area I would not walk in at night. Really didn't mean ghetto.

I hear ya. May not be the ghetto, but you wouldn't catch me taking a stroll there at night either.

Goode Co. is consistently good thought not the most moist meat I think the overall package is excellent with the bread and sauce. Grand prize in Texas city is also pretty good, and Rudy's. But to me killen's is the best of those but I haven't tried gatlin's.
