Count me among those that don't understand this Camby thing. If the goal is to get Asik back to full speed there's obviously no room for another center in the mix of things.
I am not convinced that Big Baby, Turk and Granger should be considered "talent". Replacement value players maybe (doubtful), but certainly it has been quite a while since anyone could even term them above average.
It sounds good to me. I don't think he gets any minutes, but he can plug in if there's an injury to Howard or Asik. If one of those 2 go down, who do you want playing backup center? I prefer Camby with a cane to manning it with an out-of-position power forward. Camby gives you the same sort of profile of center (low post defender, not a lot offense) as the existing ones, so the overall schemes don't change much when you plug him in. If you put Motiejunas there, you all of a sudden have a whole different skillset there -- poor low-post defense for a team accustomed to relying on good defenders there, and more range on offense for a team that doesn't expect any range from the center position. When you're compensating for an injury, low volatility is what you want.
You don't think that D-Mo has become a plus defender over the last month? The stats and many peoples eye test says that he has. But I will admit that the way things are going recently playing D-Mo at the five leaves a giant hole at the PF position.
I agree. Jimmer is a sure sniper at 49.6% 3 pt shooting. We need that kind of offense to counter double team of Harden or D12. Can we trade Lin for him? Oh, just joking. Jimmer already bought out now, free to sign with anyone he likes. I thought he wanted to play for the NY Knicks. He is hometown boy there and he killed them with 24 pts outburst last time he played there.
If Camby is now healthy and Greg Smith's injury is expected to last a while, it may be worth it to have Camby as the insurance big.
That's the only rationale that makes sense. You definitely get the vibe that Greg Smith's days as a Rocket are numbered. It sucks to say that, but at this point that fact is probably justified. I just question whether adding a guy that's strictly a five makes more sense than adding a more versatile player that can play multiple positions.
It might be Camby (if this is legit at all). I can share something I heard earlier in the year. A friend of mine is close to someone in upper management. I don't share what he tells me mostly because his connection is THE very last person to leak any info that would jeopardize any transactions. However, at times he does pass along things in conversation that are interesting. Early in the season my friend told me a couple of funny stories about Camby, and said that his connection had mentioned bringing him back to the team if rehab went well. I was a little confused, since Camby had just been cut and I assumed the Rockets were moving on. Apparently they value him a lot, and if he has anything at all left in the tank, I would not be at all surprised if they resigned him. Not hearing updates on Smith's progress lately, I wonder if he's falling out of the mix. Too bad if he is, but I don't think the team wants to go into the playoffs without a big in reserve.
We are talking about the 15th guy here. Not a whole lot of really great options. If you go for, say, Charlie V because he can play the PF and C, the issue is that he is not much of either. Particularly, he isn't much of a rim protector. Camby at least has a chance of giving you some defensive rim protection on an emergency basis.
Twin towers lineup shoulda been used earlier. McHale went to it when it was too late. I know it didnt work early in the season but, using it vs Jordan/Griffin was what it was meant for.
if its camby, its for his locker room and veteran presence. lots of young guys on the team so hes probably going to play the mentor role. dont see how he can contribute on the court unless somebody gets hurt
I think leadership and insurance would be the reasons for signing him, if indeed that is what happens.
