The most important position in basketball is the one that plays closest to the basket.... CENTER. Defensively they're the last line of defense and offensively they generally take the easiest shots. It's also easier to run your offense through the post. The game has shifted more toward the perimeter because most players grew up wanting to be like Mike and rules changes, but that doesn't mean an All-World center isn't the best player to have. A guy like Ewing would be win MVPs and DPOYs today. The league just currently has no player near Patrick's level.
in todays NBA that is completely wrong IMO, centre is hamstrung to only being able to guard one type of player and cant do what a SF could go in guard multiple positions. also offensively in todays NBA , the post up is the least effienct shot in the NBA, who wants to close with that unless your a GOAT in dirk. answer is no one, i would rather have someone at the elbow who can triple threat his way to a game winner
On your logic, I'll assume you think T-Mac was completely useless? I've never understood how players are rated on how much they win. Obviously all players need a team around them to win. Lebron never did it without Wade. Jordan never did it without Pippen. CP3 is awesome!
Hard to argue against LeBron because he's a Top 5 historical talent regardless of position, KD is not far behind either. Asik can only guard 1-type of player, yet the Rocket's defense was a 180 with/without him last year. The problem is, there aren't any great C's playing today so people downplay their importance. Ewing is nowhere near a Top 5 historical talent, but he'd definitely challenge Bron for MVPs and win DPOYs. The man went 26/12/3 against bigs that were 10x better than today.
Perhaps the PG is the least impact full position in the league because it has the best talent of any position in the league right now? The talent discrepancy between the best point guard and an average point guard is less than the same comparison of centers and shooting guards certainly. Between very good teams it is harder to decisively win any match at point guard than at the other positions? Against CP3 are Bev and Lin going to lose to a greater degree than what Blake will accomplish at the PF position? Or than will Harden will rack up? Just speculating.
I think CP3 needs a great SG or SF to play with instead of a PF to win. I don't see the Clippers as NBA Championship winners, but I don't think any less of CP3. There's only so much a PG can do.
Generally, the shorter you are, the less impact you have on a game. It's no coincidence most people's Top 10 All-Time are filled with players 6'9'' or taller. This is partly what made Magic so great. Dude grabbed 7 rebs/game regularly. Even Oscar was a big PG at 6'5''. MJ's lack of height adds to impressiveness of his feats.
I would find it hard to argue that Howard and Hibbert could not about hold their own against the best centers of the past. Drummond too perhaps in a couple of years. Okay, maybe not the Dream or Wilt or Kareem. But they would not be crushed. But man are they scarce in the draft these days. There are but a small handful in the NBA today that might be considered possible HOFers.
It means that Ainge considered him the fifth best NBA player when he was a junior in high school. An accurate projection.
Means he's awesome like MJ. One inch isn't far from 6'9'', are you gonna sue me for 1 inch? Post also began with "Generally"... meaning it is possible for a shorter player to better a taller one.
Hibbert would be decent on defense (I say decent because his rebounding blows), but what will he do on offense? Ewing's stat line would routinely obliterate Roy's. Drummond has no post moves, but he's young and has time to develop. Howard wouldn't be a Top 5 PF or C in the 90's.
I'd take CP3 over any PG except Magic... And that's only because Magic is a global icon off the court as well as on the court
Watching his front court get decimated by Memphis in the playoffs isn't a very good reason for why he's overrated.
