It's more like a combination of the two, as it's a measure how the TEAM performs when a player's on the court. The #1 factor in determining team success is still the overall talent.

But what you're saying certainly applies to obvious role players, but not really to stars. Put Beverley on the Bucks and there's no way he comes close to this number. But put Harden on the Bucks and he potentially improves his RAPM.

Agree with this. What Bev is good at is exactly the kind of skillset we need from the PG position, so it fits very well from the team's perspective. Same for Asik last year.

It's really not hard to understand. If you have a plumbing problem, a qualified plumber is definitely better than an expert painter.

But players like Asik/Bev generally are less valuable(than RAPM suggets) on the open market, because the demand/supply is different for each team.

Interesting information. Using previous season stats as prior is reasonable, but sometimes injuries or coaching/lineup/strategy changes mess things up. I tend to think the data availability/quality improvement(all those new camera's, team recorded unconvetional stats not available to public, synery stats...) may have resulted some better models nowadays for Morey's staff.

All said, I still really like RAPM and xRAPM overall. I'm mostly interested in talent evaluation, and I'd like to incorporate all stats and nonstats information together.

Asik is valuable for almost every team. The Rockets are probably one of the worst places for him in regards to RAPM. He's probably a rock in RAPM wherever he goes.

Beverley is probably on the third best team for him in regards to fit and he needs to be on a team that can create from other positions. His RAPM would probably fluctuate a lot depending on team.

I agree Asik is valuable, but his RAPM ranks near the top of the league(among allstars/superstars). He's not that valuable on the market, but he's a legit starting center for team without rim protector/rebounder.

While I agree Asik's RAPM value may be more than the Rocket's can get on the open market, but the open market includes a bunch of teams trying to lose, a bunch of stupid teams, and a bunch of playoff teams not willing to trade good players. Asik's RAPM is about 40th right now. He's above some players I would rank above him, but below some guys that I would rank below him.

Asik is one of the best non-stars in the NBA and is better than some guys that were allstars in the East.

Disclosure: I tend to value Asik and Beverley more than most NBA and Rocket fans. I tend to value Jones and Parsons a lot less than most NBA and Rocket fans.
