Manziel to Jacksonville?: There are four teams with picks in the top five who could be looking at drafting a quarterback beginning with the Houston Texans who own the first overall selection, but he the Texans pass on Manziel, he may not have to wait much longer after impressing the Jacksonville Jaguars who own the third pick. The Jaguars knew what to expect of the 2012 Heisman winner, but what he did during the interview process is what may be what sells the team on drafting the quarterback when he shook the hand of team owner, team VP, head coach Gus Bradley, offensive coordinator Jeff Fisch and general manager David Caldwell and looked them in the eye and introduced himself. “That was impressive,” Caldwell said. “He did a really nice job in there. He was prepared for the interview, very prepared.” The Jaguars weren’t the only team to come away with that impression as the Oakland Raiders who own the fifth pick came away impressed by how Manziel carried himself in their interview. Manziel may not be the first overall selection, but it’s looking like a safe bet to say he’ll be off the board inside the top five and perhaps the top three if Jacksonville pulls the trigger on the football player formerly known as Johnny Football. Harsh word from Ron Jaworkski: Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski is taking a contrarian view. During an interview on 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia, Jaworski was asked about the Eagles meeting with Manziel at the combine and said he liked the idea because it is a way of stockpiling information on a player you’re likely to play against at some point. As for the idea of taking Manziel? Jaws isn’t so keen on that for the Eagles or anyone else in the league. “I’m a big believer in Nick Foles, but who knows?” Jaworski said. “Manziel may fall. I’m not crazy about him, to be honest with you. I’ve only looked at five games. I wouldn’t take him in the first three rounds. That’s my opinion. It’s incomplete right now. But he has not done a whole lot to me.”
Nothing wrong with that assessment. Manziel does a lot wrong and needs to change a lot of the parts of his game that made him so great in college. At the same time, Jaws ranked Schaub among his top QB's last year.
Taken from a Deadspin tweet titled "Ron Jaworski is ****-talking Johnny Manziel. Before you bite, please remember how the ESPN machine operates: http://deadspin.com/how-espn-manufactures-a-story-colin-kaepernick-edition-1185400028" I'm not in favor of taking Manziel #1 overall. But, to think that Jaworski is providing insightful analysis and not simply fueling the ESPN hype machine is naïve.
Funny thing is Kaepernick had the same style of play as Johnny coming out of college and Jaws said last year Kaepernick would be the best QB ever. But I can understand why a NFL team wouldn't won't to draft him early... Different story if he was bigger.
Kapaernick also has a cannon for an arm, and never had a huge, 1st round wide receiver to lean on. Also, Jaws had seen him play a few games in the NFL, and Kapaernick had a year of experience under his belt by that point. (If I read correctly and Jaws said that about Kapaernick last year, not when he was coming out of Nevada)
I was just comparing Kaepernick's and Johnny's playing style as "college players" coming into the draft. I wasn't comparing Johnny to Kaepernick as a pro player. And Kaepernick's style of play and being skinny coming out of college is probably why he dropped to the 2nd.
Manziel has impressed me, but lets be honest. Sumlins offense is extremely qb friendly Manziels legs just add that extra dynamic
