I completed a 100 mile cycling event in the RGV this past Saturday. Not a hilly course, but one hundred miles nonetheless. My previous best was 35 miles at Conquer the Coast but had to drop because of severe cramping.

    Anyone else here into cycling?

I've done one century and a few others that were 90+ but not quite full centuries.

That's awesome. I never understood how a body could pedal for so long. I'm planning on a 65 at the end of march, and another 60+ coming up afterwards.

I dated a girl who was super into cycling. Really annoying having her wake up at 5am on a Saturday to go cycling in Nowhere, TX. Excruciating. But it really paid off. Those legs were nice.

    That's awesome on the century.

I'm starting to get into as I want to race more triathlons. The bike is by far my weakest leg. Got a new bike at the end of last year but I've been stuck on a trainer all winter.

I would love to do a triathalon, but i have bad shoulders and knees. I'm looking for kayaking/cycling events.

On my ride, I had a front tire blowout at 32 miles. I hit the deck at 15 mph. Thank God for helmets. I went down full force scraped arm, knee, bruised up my hand, and helmet hit pavement. Got up bloody and bruised, sag changed tube and inflated half way due to bead separation on tire (caused blowout) and continued. I'm feeling it today.

    Apparently not.

Over the next few months there are a lot of organized rides before MS150, I'll probably be doing 3 60+ mile rides in March.

I don't think I will attempt ms 150 until next year. Living in the RGV, that will take a little more planning as well as trying to find some hills to train on.

I have a 65 mile cross valley event coming up the end of next month. From Brownsville to McAllen. Thats almost all the way across the RGV.

Used to cycle with an uncle a few years back. Did 65 miles every Saturday in Conroe for about a year. I'm about to buy a bike and start back up again.

If you're patient you can get a decent used one off of craigslist for cheap. There's a lot of people that buy new bikes and find out they don't like riding after a month or so. You just have to be willing to wait for a good one that's the right size to show up.

Thats exatcly what I'm doing. I found a 6 year old specialized carbon fiber for $450. I want to take it to a bike shop to get it inspected before I buy it.

I love it. It's a buyers market since all these rich fat people walk into a bike shop, buy the expensive cool bikes and quit after a month or two.

It's probably stolen if it's a complete bike with decent, properly functioning components. Either that or it's cracked. Sounds well under market value. That said, craigslist is a good way to go. And having a bike shop check it before you buy it is also smart. Of course, plan on paying them for their time.

After living in Austin for a year, I detest cycling. Cyclists would be in groups of 10-20 going around Capital of Texas Hwy. For those who don't know, that's the loop that goes around Austin. It has entrance and exit ramps aka not a place for cyclists. Cycling in general is a total inconvenience on others. If its done as a means to get around and save money that's understandable, but if its done for a hobby then its inappropriate to be on highways or any major road.

Congrats on your century ride! I've done a couple myself. I had a blast doing Hotter'N Hell in Wichita Falls a couple of years back. You should check it out.

Thanks. I'll definitely look into that. My gf and I are looking to for some tours around the state.

Don't know your experience. Were they clogging up lanes? Organized events typically have lanes coned off and exit and on ramps blocked off by police escort.

He said he bought it 6 years ago and its been sitting in his garage untouched for the last two years. It's worth a look.
