Also, I'd like to point out that Mack matched Clowney's 10 yard split which is also just impressive as hell. Physically, he's a freak as well, but he hasn't played against any serious competition and his technique is a bit reckless. He'd be a really good project pass rusher if we traded back.
I think he was talking about wanting a first round QB. There isn't any QB in this class worth the #1 pick so it would be a reach for need rather than picking BPA. There are QB's to be had in the 2nd round that are just about as good as the guys at the very top of the draft. When you pick need over BPA, you get in trouble.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Clowney's 4.47 40-yd dash is nice, but the 1.56 10-yd split is more impressive. All about quick get off and explosive acceleration at DE</p>— Dane Brugler (@dpbrugler) <a href="https://twitter.com/dpbrugler/statuses/437961864715063296">February 24, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
The QBs in the 2nd round will be nothing compared to the potential of Manziel or TB. I dont think it's a slight drop off, I think it's a big cliff. Bortles, imo, is 2-3 round talent, so he's not even in discussion. It's more important to get an elite QB (or, at least, a top 10 QB) than it is to get a top 10 DE. At some point, you have to sack up and try to get that QB, even if it means risking the first pick. When else will you ever get your hands on an elite QB? It wont happen through trade and it is extremely unlikely that it will happen in free agency. In other words, it's either you spend a later pick and really try to hit the lottery...or you take a QB with the first pick and exponentially increase your odds that you've gotten something good. An elite DE does very little for a team compared to even a very good QB.
Sorry, but if you think we're getting the cushing of old you will be disappointed. Two brutal knee injuries + a steady decline of play (namely coverage skills) makes cushing a potential cap casualty after next season.
According to Mike Mayock, he IS the best player in this draft: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap20...ock-khalil-mack-would-be-my-no-1-overall-pick This is the same guy who stated that JJ Watt is the best 5 technique he has EVER seen, so I would say his opinion is valid. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=204096
I disagree, Manziel isn't an NFL caliber QB and Bridgewater will probably be a decent QB that struggles to stay healthy because of his small frame. This is a deep QB class, there are lots of guys like that. In reality, Manziel is a 5th round prospect and Bridgewater is a mid-first round prospect. Okay, but no elite, or even top 10 QB's exist in this draft class. There is however an amazing pass rush prospect. That time is the second round when you'd be getting value. You can't now, so that's irrelevant. And it won't happen in this draft almost certainly.... Or you build your team around defense and run game like the current SB champions did... Adding an elite pass rusher to a team with talent like Watt and Cushing with a RB like Foster than wasting that pick on a decent QB.
Mike Mayock also said he would draft Mack or Watkins over Clowney... And Clowney said this weekend he hopes Atlanta trades up to the #1 pick... OUCH....!!!!
He also said Blaine Gabbert was going to be a great QB....I do see what he sees in Mack, but picking a raw pass rusher from a tiny school that's never faced legit competition is VERY risky at #1 overall. His raw numbers are just about as impressive as they come, but what is he going to do when he faces legit competition? What is going to happen when he's playing recklessly against NFL offenses? He is a sky high ceiling and fairly low floor kind of guy.
shouldve prefaced my comment... "with the #1 pick overall"... I will never argue with anyone that states that a QB is a need...bc it absolutely is!!! When you have the #1 pick, and if you are getting an elite QB you select that guy. Based off every scouting report and whats out there on tape of the so called QB prospects, there is no such player that can step in and lead the Texans immediately. If that is the case, you take the best talent: Jadeveon fits that bill... Look for the Texans to be on the FA market for a QB(either as a starter or a backup; thinking Cassel)...Schaub will be a June 1st designated cut, Yates is a gonner, and Case may have a shot at the 2nd stringer...and look for the Texans to draft a QB with a high draft pick(just not #1 overall)
Only 3 players have ever been drafted in the top 10 who played in the MAC, Fisher last year, Leftwich in 2003 and Bernie Casey in 1961....There's a reason for that.
And? The point is that he plays in a conference that produces NFL players EVERY year. Let's not pretend he went to Prairie View A&M here. You are touting Clowney as the best player in this draft, when he may not even be the best defensive player in this draft.
Sorry, but that is absolutely not true at all. Manziel can be a top 10 QB...and so can Bridgewater. There are NFL QBs that have praised Manziel...it's not just a bunch of Aggies running around thinking their guy is good. He actually is good and he is far and away better than anything we could get in the 2nd round and beyond. Drew Brees thinks Manziel can do it all...Brett Favre says the same thing...these arent random fans...these are greats at the position.
I would only agree with you if Mack hadn't of TOTALLY DESTROYED Ohio St this past season. 9 tackles, 2.5 sacs, and a 45 yard interception return for a TD. He's more than JUST a pass rusher. Dude could take over for Cushing if he was needed to. I watched UCF and South Carolina and Blake looked like the best pro prospect on the field _ Not Clowney.
