It seems like almost every analyst on TV says 2 things:

    1. The Rockets are mainly a 3-point shooting team.

    2. The Rockets are a bad defensive team.

If they are this wrong about the Rockets, I wonder how wrong they are about all of the other teams they talk about on TV.

What else do you hear that is just completely wrong?

They're one year late, always describing what we did last year not this year.

Agreed bmd, I didn't know that being in the Top 10 constitutes a "bad defensive team"

Jon Barry said they were a good defensive team, said they were ranked high in the stats that matter

national perception of the Rockets is a complete joke. It's embarrassing, honestly.

Our D is top 10, but they continue to use the same "old" script because they don't do their homework.

then when a team scores on a fast break or turnover, announcers say something along the lines of:

"see!! they cannot contend because they dont play defense!"

please. those buckets happen in every game, what matters is the score at the end of the game, and last time i checked, we're 20 games over .500

they ask the same question on NBAtv every. single. night.

"so are you sold on the Rockets yet?"

and then Rick Fox goes off of his ill informed reasons like the ones above...

    Bill is incorrect....

They traded a sulking injured Asik for a hard playing Asik....

    Best trade at the deadline...

We are mainly a 3pt shooting team. We also give up a ton of unneccesary points. Stats can be decieving at times

Most everything in media? Media is to draw attention, the last thing they want is to "correct" public bias. Heat and OKC is what general public believe in, and Lakers and Knicks are biggest markets. So 7 out of 10 still believe Lakers is a good team, and they are just in a slump and they pick it up once Kobe decides to turn it on.

You can't worry about what those anal-ysts say, winning will change everything. They used to label LeBron as a loser, but now he's the ultimate definition of victor.

We can get a big lead, but unfortunately we can give the lead back

That's a misconception though, that's the absolute truth.

I agree with the OP's two listed misconceptions. In the alternative, the media's narrative should shift to:

    (1) Houston is horrible at securing the defensive rebound - opposing teams who commit to the offensive glass will have great success against Houston.

    (2) Houston is horrible at defending the three point shot - houston gives up some of the highest percentage of threes to opposing teams, thus allowing them to stay in games despite being down double digits.

    (3) Although Houston has a pretty good defense, they definitely go through lapses where teams can easily go on runs.

At least those are the points I would make if I were an analyst.
