Someone with better bench numbers will have a better ability to push off an engaged offensive lineman. Doesnt matter if he's prone, pushing against a bar, working against inanimate objects, etc...the bottom line is that chest, tricep, and anterior deltoid strength are all involved in a bench press and in a position where an offensive lineman has a hold of you and you're trying to push off. I find that a lot more useful than a DLineman running a 40 yard dash, which will never happen in a game. JJ Watt ran a 4.84...and did 34 reps. I would take that all day for a defensive lineman over someone that runs really, really fast. Sure, there are exceptions...but the majority of rushers that are successful do it more off of their strength (bench and leg strength) than their 40 yard time.
And what NFL talent on the Texans defense are you referring to...??? Lol... 49ers already had a loaded defense that is allowing Smith to be a good player. Clowney won't have that luxury. And yea, the Texans fans wanted Smith _ and they were wrong... Just like we may be wrong for wanting Clowney, Teddy, or Johnny.
If you think the Texans don't have talent on defense, then I just don't know what to say to you. I guess we have finally proven that you know nothing about football. 7th in yards/game, 3rd in passing yards/game, albeit not great in rushing yards a game (23rd), and points a game (24th), but that has more to do with turnovers than anything. That's last year. 2012 - 7th in yards a game, 16th in passing yards a game, 7th in rushing yards a game, 9th in points a game. And this is with a coordinator that routinely tried to fit a square peg in a round hole. So, how do the Texans not have an NFL level defense? Get out of here with your nonsensical, pessimistic BS.
Clowney hasn't played an NFL snap so you're jumping the gun saying he's the best in the league and he wasn't the best pass rusher in college.
Goodness gracious...just saw the highlights...my goodness gracious the man is fast...The speed of the edge is going to be impossible to block. Something tells me he was working on impressing folks with his speed rather than brute strength...The Texans better be sure that the QB they want is the best for this organization, bc we cant afford to pass up on a guy like this. Mercilus, Watt, Draft Nose Tackle(ie. Daniel McCullers), Crick, and Clowney... That is a massive and scary front 5...
If we had Cushing all year, and a competent quarterback, we would have been absolutely fine on defense last year. Fact of the matter is that we have consistently been better than the majority of other NFL defenses over the past few years. If you want, you can PM me your address. I'll mail you some Beano. Maybe then, you'll stop talking out of your ass so much.
I won't go that far, our defense was fundamentally flawed because we didn't have enough talent to get any pressure on the QB without blitzing because our 4 man rush was essentially JJ Watt and no one else.
Not to mention, I think our DB's are well below par as a unit. Our OLB's were horrible. Watt, Smith and Cushing were main guys on our D. Hurts when Cushing goes down.
Put Clowney on our defense last year and we probably win at least 2 or 3 more games easy. Not being able to get pressure without blitzing killed us a lot.
When just one player can give a disaster of a football team a few more wins minimum, he's pretty awesome.
Not if the defense isn't fixed. If we had Teddy last year we wouldn't have won any more games than we did.
If TB was even an average QB last year and just took care of the ball, we'd easily win 4 more games. Schaub was horrible so obviously TB could be better w/o even trying. You don't think TB is better than Case?
I don't think Bridgewater would perform any better than Schaub and Keenum did last year under the circumstances, no. With no run game, a porous O line, and a defense that couldn't get any pressure on opposing teams without blitzing, Bridgewater wouldn't have done anything.
He didn't watch many games last year, and fails to realize what a good QB means to a team. His love for Clowney is understandable, but assumes he will already be a stud before playing an NFL snap all while having work ethic issues which were highlighted by his own college coach. He's ignorant and unwilling to be objective.
